    I bought one of these units, and have a few caveats after a month of use. It’s rather noisy (there’s an air pump that runs constantly and emits a hum, louder than that of my fridge). I was told that the hum would quiet down after a few days, but it didn’t to any noticeable degree.

    Also, despite all the claims that the Naturemill is odor free, that is not quite true in my experience. The problem is that whatever you put in the hopper stays there for a few days and starts to decompose before it gets transferred to the composting reactor (the middle compartment). Whenever you open the hopper to put in more materials, you’re greeted with quite a powerful stench. Mold will also grow in the upper hopper and people with allergies may react to the spores. I work at home in a small apartment, and the smell became pretty unbearable at times. I can’t leave windows open for long to bring in fresh air as it’s winter here and cold.

    You also have to pay close attention to the mix of materials you put in (outdoor compost bins are a bit more forgiving), and you need a source of good garden soil to start the composting process…not always easy to find if you live in a city.

    Naturemill’s customer support was prompt and courteous, and they seem like a well-run company; I have no complaints about them.

    I’ve had a NatureMill for about 6 months and let me just say WOW. This thing is quite amazing and makes the best compost I have ever seen (and I have quite a few years of backyard compost experience). I got the newer “two chamber” model which has all the kinks worked out that the earlier model may have struggled with – understandable for a new technology product. Mine is silent, and has a very faint smell of mushrooms and coffee when I open the lid (which I quite enjoy).

    Best of all this machine works indoors, right in the kitchen! I still can’t believe that I don’t need to make the trek outside to my compost pile any more. It just sits there all lonely covered in snow and not doing much. I did quite a bit of research and didn’t find anything else which can make compost like this.

    My one complaint about NatureMill is that it is only for kitchen waste, shredded paper, and the like. It handles the 5 lbs a day of food scraps that the company claims, and that’s fine for our family of 5, but when it comes to yard waste, a pumpkin, or the Sunday newspaper, it just can’t handle that kind of load.
