San Francisco Is Trying to Protect Our Children
Have you heard lately that the city of San Francisco in California passed legislation in June prohibiting the sale of toys containing six toxic chemicals called phthalates and another toxic substance called bisphenol-A? I was elated to hear of this law since European countries have embraced similiar laws to protect their babies against these substances but here in the US we are always a day late it seems. Lead in Your Christmas Lights
Have you seen the warnings that now appear on some holiday lights? Some of them are sporting a label that warns that they may contain lead. Wire coating and cords are usually made of PVC plastic that may contain lead. Lead is used in PVC for several reasons. For wires and cords, lead makes the plastic more flexible and reduces the risk of fire. Lead is also used in many PVC products to stabilize the color. Grow Your Own Luffa
I ran across a pretty cool blog post the other day from GroovyGreen. It outlines how to grow your own luffa sponge. As the post says "Many people are surprised when they find out I grow my own Luffa sponges. Dont those come from the sea?, is the standard question to which I respond that the Luffa is a vegetable you can grow in your very own garden." Wow! I had no idea you could grow your own luffa.
