We natural moms have a bunch of labels like hippie, granola, and even crunchy. Well, I get asked all the time what in the world crunchy means so I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Urban Dictionary online has a definition for crunchy mama.
Crunchy Mama:
Mother who supports homebirth, breastfeeding, baby wearing, cloth diapering, co-sleeping, gentle discipline, etc. One who questions established medical authority; tends to be vegetarian and/or prepare all-organic foods. See crunchy and hippie.
So by this definition are you a crunchy mama?
Yes all except the vegetarian part. Pass the grass fed. LOL!
YEP! Except for the vegetarian part here too, but I was as a teen.
Yes to all…we lean in the vegetarian direction but wouldn’t label ourselves as strictly vegetarian. :-)
Yes, everything but the last part. :)
Not vegetarian at all, and didn’t CD but yes to the rest plus extended nursing.
My own version of the set, but so pleased to see this… Never once have I allowed or even desired to be “labeled” or associated with a label, but alas, I willingly have pasted this label on my forehead. ;)
No to home birth and vegitarian even though I decide to be vegan about every day just can’t stick to it. Yes to everything else.
I consider myself crunchy, but not restricted to a particular definition of the title. I support homebirth and breastfeeding, but all my babies are adopted, so I have done neither.
I also support baby wearing, cloth diapering, and co-sleeping, but am not sure what ‘gentle discipline’ is. What it sounds like is not disciplining at all, so I’m out on that one.
I question established medical authority by doing my own research before and after a diagnosis, but I don’t shun it as a whole.
We eat a lot of vegetarian and as much organic foods as possible, but we also eat meat when we want it, and eat out just as often as we eat in.
So, I’m crunchy in my own right, and own way. ;)
I was interested in what ‘Crunchy Mamma’ Meant, so i googled it and found your blog, thanks for clearing it up. Thanyou, Now i know :-)
Mostly, apart from the homebirth and vegetarian.
not vegetarian… traditional foods!
NO.. not even close!
I would also say yes to almost all. Not a vegitarian and have had to have all my children through c section:( although am hoping for a vbac next time.
all but vegetarian. We buy non-gmo, grass fed, pastured, and organic from local farmers.

Yes, except for the vegetarian, like a lot of others have said. We too love our local/grass fed meat.
To MommyOH, gentle discipline is still guiding your child, but no corporal punishment.
I am a crunchy mama. I was trying to have a home-birth but my daughter was breech so my midwife recommended the hospital=( emergency c-section after 18.5 non-medicated hours of labor=] Not vegetarian, but all my meat is vegetarian fed, grass fed, or free range.=]]
I support cloth diapering, breastfeeding baby wearing, organic baby food but I do not support soff discipline and I like meat.
Hello:
My name is Miranda Farley and I am currently a graduate
student at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at
the University of California, Santa Barbara. I am working on a product
that focuses on how expectant and new mothers evaluate natural and
organic health and beauty products. I would like to chat with women who
meet this criteria. If you or anyone you know would be willing to talk
with me either on the phone or in person, please let me know. You can
contact me at mfarley@bren.ucsb.edu.
Thank you very much for your time.
Yes to all; however, the gentle discipline can vary day to day. I never thought of myself as crunchy or hippie, I just thought I was educated and informed.
I love being a Crunchy! :)
