Thanks for this post. This is all stuff my husband and I have been trying to work on for a while now. We're finding the transition to an organic lifestyle is much less overwhelming if we do it slowly, implementing new items/techniques/ideas as we discover them! :-)

Great info and insight, joining our local CSA made a huge difference in our grocery bill, not to mention the variety of ingredients I started cooking with.

[...] * Organic foods - It is important that my family eats food with no pesticides, antibiotics, hormones, or chemicals in it. All of these things can accumulate in the body and cause health problems. For me it is issue of clean or dirty almost. Organic is “clean” food and I that is what I want to eat and what I want my kids to eat. I wrote an article last year about how to eat organic affordably. [...]

Thank you for writing this. It's very informative. I've been considering going organic for a while now and you given me hope that, Yes I can afford to do this. I wasn't even aware that Costco had an organic section.

I totally agree with you that organics are affordable. I live in a part of Australia where everything seems to attract big freight costs. So buying local at the weekend markets for produce is a definite bonus for the budget. If I can't get to those markets, I visit my local organic guy whose prices are frequently lower or the same as the supermarkets. The taste is better, it tends to last much longer and I'm supporting a local business. Only then do I visit the supermarket and I try to stick to the one that supports the local community the most.
I still buy regular milk because here in Australia the dairy industry is still pretty friendly but I definitely buy my eggs organically.
And I am glad that I support the local producers in our area - it makes for much more interesting eating. Last trip to the market I got sapodillas for the kids lunchboxes, winter melon, lots of Asian spinachy type of vegetables etc. The kids learn to eat a wide variety of foods and I learn to cook some really interesting things.
So what if the occasional 1 L bottle of grape juice cost about $8? It's actually so much superior [and concentrated] that by the time I dilute it down the price is about the same! And I tend to savour the experience much more and take he time to enjoy it.

Wow, what a great post! I was going to write about this topic on my blog, but you covered it so well, I think I'll just reference your post. And I didn't even think of the Amish even though an Amish community is just 30 minutes from my home. While I go to a lot of Farmers' Markets, I hadn't even thought of visiting the Amish ... except to see the horse and buggies. Thanks for pointing this out to me. Keep up the great blog!

This is a great post and Barbara Kingsolver in her new book brings up an eye-opening point (for me anyway) that I'm sure others already live by too - we spend so much time trying to save money on food, when in fact we should not. We are feeding our bodies - so why skimp? If you want to save money stop buying those grande java chip frappacinos that are not fairtrade anyway (not that I would know ANYTHING about what I'm talking about - who me? Sigh.).
