The trash is simply sent to landfill. A bunch of international students at my school are carrying out the recycling campaign - we recycle plastic and aluminum cans on our own, from the entire school building. There are just two Americans in the recycling group, whereas 5 Indians, 4 Taiwanese and a couple of Africans. I think the Americans should start taking more responsibility of the natural resources, in not only using them judiciously, but also recycling them. My daughter's preschool teaches them about recycling.
