Pickel, what Tiffany said was very true. Try it and see how it goes.

If you need more ideas, I just posted an article " Ten Child Discipline Tips That Work:"

PIckel,

I can't tell you what Elizabeth would say but I have a child like that as well. He does not physically hit but he gets verbally abusive. The key for me is remaining calm and not getting visibly frustrated with his behavior. If he gets a rise out of me then he got what he wanted and it will continue. So I calmly tell him I will not discuss his needs until he can speak to me calmly and respectfully and I walk away. If he comes up to me agagin and repeats this behavior I walk away again. Eventually he realizes he will not get what he wants until he can speak calmly and in his normal voice. If we get stuck in a cycle of arguing then my attention is razor focused on him...just like he wants it...but yet neither of us is happy or getting what we need. It is a game or sorts and I don't play it. I want our interaction to be a win-win situation for us both and I tell him that. "I will give you my attention and try to meet your needs but I need your help. I need you to speak nicely to mommy, don't call names, and speak in your normal voice so I can undertstand you. If you do all of this I can find out what you need and why your upset and we can figure out a way to fix the problem together okay?"

Value them by communicating with them like this and they will usually respond positively. Don't get sucked into the cycle of arguing and attacking because once started it is hard to stop and everyone is miserable.

What a day to read this review. I had a horrible, count the bruises, kind of day wherein Little Pickel spent the entire day attacking me. Question is...how do you apply those strategies to kids like him?

Hi Tiffany,
Thank you for writing such an amazing review of my book. I loved your tire story -- it made my husband and me laugh -- and it also truly demonstrates how keeping a calm head can indeed teach the lesson you're trying to impart. Pat on your back for doing an amazing job in a crazy situation!
Stay well and happy.
Hugs,
Elizabeth ~^*

What a nice review! I used to think punishment and spanking are the way to discipline but not anymore. There are other better and more effective ways. I like this phrase:

"It turns discipline into a positive, affirming experience with proven techniques that help you address discipline in a way that fits your child’s unique personality."

The keywords here are positive and unique personality.
