I had the chance to read several really great books to my children recently. They all had the common theme of helping bring awareness to healthy living, eco friendly living, or being socially conscious and of course they were all meant for children. I have decided to focus on each book individually so as not to overwhelm you and I will review the others another day.
The first book we read was Three Grin Salad – A Kid’s Recipe for a Happy and Healthy Life by Aja King. Aja is not only a talented writer but she is also a child herself.
The question on the back of the book says it all.
Q: How can a kid survive and thrive in a fast-food, cyber-crazee world?
A: With a recipe for a healthy, happy life from a great, healthy, happy kid!
Aja helps your kids explore why active kids are healthier and have more energy. She does this by sharing with us how she spends her days…what she eats, how she stays active, and why balance is important for health and happiness. The book also addresses junk food…whats in it, why it is unhealthy, and why it has a direct correlation to the way you feel. Aja also mixes in some recipes for health and happiness like one for love, one for gratitude, and one for the title of the book.
Some older children who enjoy their time with computers, TV, and video games might be a little unhappy with Aja’s criticism of these activities so not every recipe will please every palate.
The best thing about it though is that it is written from a child’s perspective with language a child would understand so it is really a great book to help kids understand the importance of eating healthy and exercising. Be sure to stop by the Three Grin Salad web site to hear the theme song that goes along with this book.

Sounds like such a cute book. I think my daughters would enjoy it.
Thank you for sharing this with the Carnival of Family Life. Your post will be included in the July 30th edition at An Island Life.

Great idea for a book. Pity that she is critical of computers and TV etc. I mean, there are certainly bad things about those things, but they shouldn’t be snubbed outright!
If I think of my kids (well, when I have kids) I do think I would prefer for them to enjoy the outside, and hang around there more than inside behind a computer. But, I certainly wouldn’t mind them getting some computer in, and certainly wouldn’t mind them getting some reading in. I myself, though, was a kid brought up on the computer (basically) and I didn’t turn out too bad (I think.) Although I still think it’s better if kids do more outdoor activities.
That sounds like a great book. It’s very timely since lately what matters most to children are computer games, TV, MySpace, and the likes. Food chains are very attractive and so inviting that even adults can’t resist them sometimes.
