Applesfest – Local Fun, Local Food

by Tiffany in Eating Local, The Homestead

This past weekend the kids and I went to our local apple orchard for Applefest. The orchard grows 26 different varieties of apples and is a family operation. The festival actually takes place behind their house and next to the orchard. The kids got to pet the farm animals, ride in a horse-drawn wagon, ride in a train car pulled by a lawn mower, make their way through a hay maze, and dance to a live bluegrass band. There favorite part was playing in a sandbox filled with corn kernals. They called it corn sand and they had a blast playing in it. Mom couldn’t help but thinking in the back of her mind that it was probably GM corn. Oh well.

In addition they also had apples, apple pies, caramel apples, pumpkins, and fresh apple cider to eat and buy. Yum! I am looking forward to going back in a few weeks for the famous apple butter stir and horseradish grind. All of this fun was only five minutes from my house.

Autumn is my favorite season simply because of the beautiful scenery, the delicious scents, and the “harvest” feel of it all. Prosperity.

I have an apple spice reed diffuser in my dorm room now. It makes me smile everytime I walk in :)

We did the exact same thing last weekend! Right down to the corn kernel sandbox. It was 80 degrees out here though (in Michigan) so it was just… wierd.
