Good post and great insights into home schooling. Homeschooling has to suit both the mom and the child.

Hi Tiffany,
I REALLY enjoyed this Q&A and getting a peek into the day in a life of a homeschoolin blogger. We are also considering homeschooling for our daughter, but excites me and scares the pants off me at the same time! I was no where near the academic that you were, would you consider online tutoring for our family?! ha ha :)
Thanks for a great read.

Thank you so much for this GREAT GREAT post! We plan on homeschooling when we have kids and I'm going to (again, as I do with most of your posts!) refer back to it. Thank you!

Cheers,
Kristen

I enjoy reading your blog... and was surprised to read that you child had a reaction to being immunized...

(my son went unresponcive for 5 hrs after his 1 year immunization.)

and that you had Cancer...

(2 years ago I had a neck dissection for a melanoma)

My kids have had their fair share of "health classes" as their dad is only 32 and has an ostomy bag due to his bowel surgery brought on by a heart attack 3 months ago... - he has Marfans...)

we mostly unschool as well...

:)

it's nice to hear from someone else as free and passionate as you are...

Great answers !
I have been homeschooling for 13 yrs my daughter has never gone to school and many people have asked me - do you homeschool because she is so well behaved and is just so different then most 13 yr olds. What I can also say is when kids are homeschooled they tend to learn how to play with many different ages, and with boy and girls. They don't see the differences between the kids.
where I live there is so much to do and places to meet other homeschoolers. So my kids have many friends.
I can also say that the younger years it is so nice just to play and read to your kids. They will learn so much with out even trying. When my daughter was younger I had an art area for her - lots of stuff so she could make lots of art. She had a blast.
It also nice to teach or for them to learn what they really want to, not what the school wants them to. I teach my kids to learn not to test.
Kids don't learn all the same way, or as fast as some. Well I better stop writing. good luck to anyone that is just starting to homeschool,

My husband was homeschooled, while I went to public school. Amazing differences, yet we're torn about what to do with our son. We always thought for sure we were sending him to a private school. Now we might be moving, and it is all up in the air!

Thanks for your insight! Oh, and I think this is one area where other countries do a better job. Kindergarten is for play... :)

Homeschooling is a great choice for your son!! In the SF Bay area, California, there is a huge push for reading in kindergarten which I find amazingly inappropriate as some kids are just not biologically/mentally ready. The schools want kids to know 100 words by sight at the end of K and I know that I did not know this until well into first grade. The focus on academics is misplaced for sure. Additionally, only a few schools in our district offer half day for Kindergarden. All the others are FULL DAY programs which again is rediculous. What ever happened to napping your kids in the afternoons?#*! The schools reason that the kids are able to participate in more "enrichment" activities with the full day and that with the half day they need all available school time for acedemics. I am a fully functioning highly literate person (minus spelling) who writes for a living and I did not read in Kindergarden.... so I whole heartedly agree with homeschooling where appropriate. Thumbs up to your personalized program.
