The Benefits of Green Smoothies

by Tiffany in Health & Healing, Healthy Eating

Green for Life BookGreen Smoothies have to be one of the smartest creations ever. The benefits are awesome and the taste even better. There are so many people learning about these crafty concoctions and their bodies are thankful for the introduction.

Maybe you are asking just what a green smoothie is. The answer is rather simple. A green smoothie is a fruit smoothie that includes a big serving of dark green leafy vegetables. And please don’t let the name fool you because they are not all green and they definitely don’t taste like grass.

Green smoothies are excellent choices for meals such as breakfast because they provide the healthy carbohydrates, along with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and chlorophyll that a body needs for proper energy source that won’t weigh you down or give that false start followed by a hard fall that unhealthy carbs tend to do. They are also full of fiber which your body needs for proper waster elimination. And they have several servings of greens!

You will find that by consuming more greens you are able to get the amino acids needed for protein as well as antioxidants, and Alkaline minerals which are all important to the function of the body.

Green smoothies are also a perfect way to get your kids to eat their veggies without a fight. They may gawk at the color, especially if it turns out green but they will love the taste so much they will most likely forget the color. Or they may like…my kids love to drink spinach smoothies and be like “Popeye”. You may find that with the older kids, they start to make them without your assistance as a snack or even for their buddies who stop by for a visit. It is truly wonderful.

Because so few of us consume the amount of greens we need to per day, adding green smoothies to the diet can only help. Drinking one or two of these drinks per day will not only give you’re the added necessary nutrition your body needs but you also find that you actually get full. This makes a green smoothie and excellent meal replacement choice.

Some people who consumed green smoothies on a regular basis have reported they  noticed improvements in digestion, skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne, healing of various conditions such as thyroid problems, and more!  I know when I started drinking green smoothies I noticed a huge difference in my skin. I finally knew what they meant by glowing skin…it was like I shaved ten years off my face after just a couple of days. I don’t know exactly how to describe it, but it was amazing.

With green smoothies you can mix the greens with any combination of fruit and enjoy a tasty healthy treat that is practically fat free and low in calories. It is as if you are having your cake and eating it to. Really, they are just that good.

Green smoothies are not the wave of the future, they are the here and now. Learning to make them on a daily basis is healthy for you, your family, and even the environment because you are consuming less meat which makes our earth a happy earth.

I’ve been loving my green smoothies. I had only planned to go three days and I’m still enjoying them 4 days later. I wish everyone would try them once!

  • casual friday everyday

I bought the book because of one of your previous posts and my eyes were peeled wide open the entire time. Funny because now I’m going through the book again and taking notes. This year, out of all the books I’ve read, it has been the most beneficial and educational read. I’m going to the store tonight for our first green smoothie goods :)

On a side note, I just found out today from my Mom that when my Grandmother had Breast cancer years and years ago she opted for green smoothies and other healthy approaches instead of chemo and she hasn’t had a problem since.

  • Great post! I still have to read that book. Can’t find it at the library.
What’s worked best for me and my less powerful blender is to puree the fruit with some liquid and then add the greens and bump up the speed. Also baby spinach is the most mild tasting green if you want to start out small. Kale and mustard greens are the strongest tasting we’ve tried.

  • They are strong but I find ripe bananas or pineapple will mask them nicely.

  • LOL my sister in law last week suggested me to make some of those smoothies cause with all day sickness and nothing staying in!!! she taught that our little growing baby might benefit from the vitamins and if I do end up trowing it up well it’s smooth LOL

I guess I should take this post as a hint!!!!

  • That’s great Nell! Amazing about your grandmother too.

I participated in the Green Smoothie Challange and read a question posted to the Raw Divas that did not get addressed. Maybe someone has an answer? If you consume a lot of green smoothies, isn’t the sugar intake very high since they have a lot of fruit in them.
I also wondered if there was a reason none of the smoothie recipes I came across used non-fat yogurt?
    Just Curious!

  • Nikki,

I am not worried about the sugar in the fruit because it is natural sugar…not anything like the stuff you get in a snickers bar or even fruit juice. This is the good sugar. I have two smoothies a day and it totally fills me up and really not much sugar in the scheme of things.

This looks amazing – I really only juice fruit and make fruit and yogurt based smoothies, but I’m really open to trying this as well. I do have a question – can you store what you make for a day or two, or do you have to consume what you make immediately or within a few hours? Does the smoothie lose nutritional value if it sits?

    Thanks for this post!

  • Amy

I’ve been doing these for about a year now. I do fresh spinich, frozen fruit of all kinds, a fresh banana, carrots, and that green Odwalla blend, goji berries and a chunck of fresh ginger..so yummy. My two year old has one almost each day! I’ve lost 4% body fat and about 9 inches since I’ve started adding these in with my work outs….wow!!

  • Yes, they do lose nutrtinal value so it is best to drink within a few hours. But I will save some for the next day if I made to much…I am sure it still has some good nutrition left. ;)

  • Ronica

What was the blender that she recommended in the video, I could not catch it? I have blender issues and I know that mine would never be able to handle that recipe.

Thanks…..another cool book to look for!!!
