Here in Western Canada, we are proud of Barry MacDonald - an author/speaker/advocate of boys. Check our his recent newsletter which addresses the topic of getting your boys outside. Obviously, he specifically researches the needs of boys, but the principles are good for girls as well. http://www.mentoringboys.com/

I enjoyed your post. I am an advocate on connecting kids with nature. Nature walks are an easy way to inspire parents to take their kids outside. :)

Nature provides negative ions, far infrared energy, magnetic energy, Vitamin D and probably a whole lot more that humans haven't discovered yet! Exercise boosts serotonin levels. TV hypnotizes children and in my opinion shouldn't be in the home if you have kids. Get out in nature daily. Even if it's just a quick walk in the park or shoveling snow in the winter, it should be a daily activity.

Lovely, inspiring post! I took my kids on a walk the other day and it's so amazing to connect on another level. We played a game called 'let's see what we can see' and we'd just point things out to each other. My 2 year old pointed out 'a baby octagon' and it was indeed a small octagon! I love it when he is able to apply the things he's learning to real life. These are precious days with our kids and they can pass by too quickly if we don't take the time to slow down and connect.

Great indepth post. Nature is great for adults as well (as you mentioned), humans are not designed to be in concrete jungles with things passing them every millisecond as it becomes overwhelming on the mind.

Thats why they built parks in all the cities.

This is great! Thanks for sharing! I've been taking my younger kids on nature walks lately and I've noticed that it seems to help my child who has attention problems. I should take take my teens with me on walks more often.
