you got a great list... in my house whenever we have bad season like winter... I let her play online, but what I do is I choose games that has educational values. Like what she's playing at http://www.clubtuki.com , all of the games there are kids safe and educational so I don't have to worry that she'll encounter inappropriate content for her age.

OK, so in our house, we have both Carcasonne and Ticket to Ride. We love them both! Carcassone is meant to be rather competetive but we play it in a 'develop on your own' attitude instead of trying to cut each other off (as we adults originally learned). Carcasonne has numerous editions - the original is a medival castle walls version... but there is also a meadows and forest one... so there's lots of room for choosing one that suits your family's interests.
And T2R is our personal fav. Because we have travelled (with our kids) to Europe and hope to do so again one day (dreaming...), we bought the Europe version. Our son is 7 now, and he has been playing it for over a year - originally with modified rules and now with full 'adult' rules. It's easy to modify the rules and the adults can play alongside with full rules. As an added note, my hubby & I bought the Swiss board as well, so that we can play a 2 person game. You have to have the Europe board in order to buy the Swiss edition, but it's nice to have for evenings for two.

Also, you could check out San Juan. A compact strategy game using cards.

Have fun!

ah, thank you for this list! I've never heard of any of them, but I'm super interested in the Ticket to Ride game. I'm home schooling my boys (although I am interested in un-schooling too). These are really excellent recommendations. I'm going to try the ticket to ride one and maybe I'll write a review about it. Love the educational stuff.

Thanks for the recommendations! I will keep these in mind for Christmas gifts - I'm always on the lookout for games like the ones you recommended. Also, have you played "Settlers of Catan" yet? It's a fun game that kids as young as six or seven can enjoy - and my husband and I love playing it with our friends once the kids are in bed.

Hi from Australia! The weather is just starting to get hot here. For a really LOW tech board game, how about this one, with saint and adders you will actually help children in need too. If you think its great pass it on!
