I decided to travel with my kids this past Christmas to teach them that experiences are more important than materialistic things. We booked a trip to Costa Rica and had an absolutely AMAZING time! We went hiking, surfing, birdwatching and SO much more. It was truly the experience of a lifetime..and definitely not your average Christmas. I couldn't recommend Costa Rica enough for families, especially those that want to be environmentally aware. We used this website: http://www.naturefamilyadventures.com/index.html, which proved to be a great resource with lots of great green family hotels and lodges. I don't know what I would have done without it...

Freecycle aka Santa! I got a new, still in the box table top easel for my 2 yr old, an 8 gallon aquarium with all parts included for my 9 yr old and a 55 gallon aquarium for my 14 yr old. All from Freecycle. Ask and ye shall receive! We normally go to church Christmas Eve. None of us were in the mood this yr and just so busy. I made the decision not to go and everyone had a big sigh of relief. So we stayed home and truly enjoyed our family time. My 2 yr old threw up big time at the same time we wouldve been at church had we gone. Sometimes we make the right decision for the wrong reason. I also kept a very detail list of every gift including cost I purchased. It really helped me control my spending and the amount of gifts we got the kids. Not to mention, the clutter that would be left over.

I'm not a mom, but I came across your blog and I want to say it's comforting there are people like you out there making sure the next generation will care about the environment.

A Happy New Year to you and your readers!

Sounds like a lovely Christmas! Our was also very low key. Most our family lives accross country and we were completely by ourselves this year. I felt bummed about it at first, but then came Christmas Eve and I was really enjoying being alone with my hubby and kids. We even took the kids skating for the first time the day after Christmas and we had the BEST time ever!

We are also thinking about getting a Wii soon as a family present... sounds like it's totally worth it!

Enjoy the rest of your holidays!
