The Downside of Local Organic Corn?

Or is it really a downside? The kids sure loved finding these guys and finding new homes for them in our yard. It certainly is a huge plus to be able to go to the local farmer’s market and buy 2 dozen ears of non GMO, organic corn for dinner and chit chat with the farmer that grew it. Bugs or not. ;)

    Oh! No, no, no! I get the heebie geebies just looking at that. I’m all for organic, but hubby would be the one shucking the batch if I found one of those.

    Being able to talk to the person that grew the food that you are going to eat makes up for all the bugs in the world if you ask me. I just love being connected to where my food comes from!

    As long as I noticed before cooking and/or eating it doesn’t bug me too much, there are worse things!

    Of course after watching baby girl scream bloody murder this afternoon because a fly (that had been trapped in the car) kept landing on her, I had better keep the bugs away for a while! ;)

    I read once that a farmer said if you pull down the top of an ear of corn and there’s no bug damage at the tip then you know it’s lousy corn and not worth eating. I’ve grown accustomed to soaking our broccoli in warm salt water so the tiny green caterpillars float to the top and carefully inspecting the blackberries and raspberries from the back yard for the little black beetles that love them as much as we do. It’s a sign that the foods are still non-toxic enough for creatures to want them. :)

    i can remember being a kid and finding those in our ears of corn! great memories. i found it fun, yet i was always afraid i was going to accidentally eat one. haha!

    I love getting organic corn from my CSA, and I always always check it all as once as i get home for those little buggies. I always wash all my fruit and produce before I put in the fridge or freezer for another day.

    He’s cute! I found snails on some chard once at my Farmer’s Market in CA. I like seeing bugs every once in a while. It reassures me that the farmers are not using pesticides!!

    My husband works for a CSA, and i’m fascinated by their natural corn pesticide: the farmers have to put a drop of vegetable oil on each ear. One new farmer decided not to (crazy-tedious), and he lost the entire crop.

    We grew corn in our backyard this year, and just froze 20 quarts of it last weekend. Everything in our yard is strictly organic, and we never did anything to the corn other than water it. Yet somehow, we had no worms at all. I was amazed. We did have some little beetles here and there around the tops of a few ears, but they didn’t seem to be eating anything. Out of an entire wheelbarrow load of corn cobs, I had to trim the ends of maybe 10 of the cobs because of bug damage. I had been expecting worms in all of them and was pleasantly surprised.
