The whole week is a local foods celebration here in Ohio. We started off the week with our first ever visit to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. They are local to the area and they use local, seasonal ingredients for the most part. The cream comes from the local, grass fed, Snowville Creamery that provides us with milk each week. It was just named America’s Best Ice Cream by the Food Network too!
The flavors are a bit different but oh so yummy. Of the flavors we tried today, our faves were hands down the Salty Caramel, the Goat Cheese with Cherries, and the Goat Cheese with Cognac Fig Sauce. I think a trip to Jeni’s is going to be a regular monthly thing! Reminder to self though… bring along our wooden spoons so we can decline the plastic ones in the shop…
Is there a way to find out places in our area that uses locally grown products?
Do a search for local food in your town and see if there any results. Ohio has a pretty big eat local movement so I guess it just depends on the area. Also search for “food blog in ?” and you can usually find some local places that serve local food.
That looks really yummy to a pregnant mama! Think I’ll have to seek some out now :)
Just tried Jeni’s the other day…in Dayton, the only place you can get it is in Yellow Springs by the pint…SO GOOD!
I just moved to Ohio from Florida via North Carolina. I am ecstatic at the selection of local organic farms in the area. I came across the Local Harvest website while searching for pumpkin patches and apple orchards. It is a great site and you can search the entire US for farms, restaurants, co-ops, farmers markets and meat processors. My husband and I have been visiting one or two of these farms in our area over the last month and are now able to replace the majority of our grocery shopping with local organic foods at an affordable price. Each listing shows what types of foods they offer and there is a chart showing when it is available (spring, summer, fall, winter). I hope you all enjoy it and please pass it on so we can all enjoy local foods year round!
I don’t see where the website posted, so here it is: http://www.localharvest.org/
I’m glad I don’t live in Ohio. Ice cream is a problem for me (I keep telling myself I can stop whenever I want to) and I’d have trouble staying away from this place.
My friend and her husband recently started a locally grown foods delivery business in the Columbus area. The concept is to deliver fresh local foods right to your door!
