Poll Data Shows Moms Want to Know About GMOs

by Tiffany in Political Action

A new poll has been released that shares some interesting information about how moms feel about GMOs, or genetically modified foods. If large food corporations are banking on consumers not being informed about GMos or not caring if they are labeled then they are in for a rude awakening. Whether or not they are ready to admit it, these companies are vulnerable and if they are on the wrong side of this issue…well it won’t end well.

Lake Research Partners conducted the poll and it shows that customers want to know if their food contains GMO ingredients and they feel betrayed when companies seek to hide this information.

70% of moms declared they were less likely to buy from Quaker or parent company Pepsico when told that they are funneling millions of dollars towards initiatives designed to effectively block our right to know about GMOs. 93% want Quaker to label GMOs and 80% want them to stop trying to block label laws.

81% said they are less likely to buy from brands who sell food with GMO ingredients, which contributes to the increased use of toxic pesticides. Glyphosate, the primary herbicide used on GMO crops, is considered a probable human carcinogen by the World Health Organization.

We have been told for a long time that GMOs will help feed the world but any practice that increases the use of pesticides is not sustainable or practical to feed the world. I have also been told by several of my local farmers (who use GMO crops) that they do not produce more yield than conventional (non GMO) crops. We moms are very concerned about the chemicals our children are exposed to and if GMOs are being grown with heavy loads of potentially cancer causing chemicals…well, no thank you. If they aren’t producing MORE food than conventional growers then what is the point?????

Consumers are getting savvy. They are demanding truth in labeling and transparency about ingredients and practices. This trend will only continue and gain more steam. Brands need to rethink their current practices if they want to survive.

Join me in this revolution!

People all across the country are fed up with being kept in the dark. That’s why I’m working with Just Label It to bring the Conceal or Reveal campaign to Quaker’s doorstep. But we need your voice, too.

Ask Quaker to support mandatory FDA labeling of GMOs, stop funding anti-mandatory labeling efforts, and stand up against the DARK Act!

Wellness, Energy, Health – Time to Recommit

by Tiffany in Health & Healing

The collection of goodies below I recently recieved from Now Foods as a #NOWWellness blog ambassador.

About a year ago this former gym rat fell off the health and fitness bandwagon. You see it was about that time that my mom started her final decline after a 4 year battle with breast cancer. She lost that battle a couple months ago. In recent days I feel as though I am maybe starting to get my head above water and realize that I have let my own health decline far too much.

Not long ago I was sharing on Facebook when I would PR my deadlifts or my hang cleans. I was sharing paleo recipes that fueled me for intense and grueling CrossFit workouts. I was walking, running, hiking, and lifting heavy weights. It was a hobby as much as it was a concern for my health. But then it all faded away. I started to feel run down and I lost my love for working out. I lost my love for cooking good meals and opted instead for quick and easy. With everything going on in my personal life I had no more energy to give or rather I had no desire to give it. Life was losing its luster.

Eventually I did find some medical stuff going that explained my lack of energy (such as non existent vitamin D levels) but much of it was probably good old fashioned stress and depression from a loved one declining. I am feeling like I am in a better place and perhaps ready to focus on my health and wellness once again. I have gained a ton of weight and I have lost so much muscle mass and physical stamina. I need to get serious again.

To that end I am excited to to be using some great products from Now Foods to help me kickstart my goals.

The sprouted brown rice and plant protein complex make great shakes and smoothies to fill me up and fuel some workouts. The Acai Lemonade sticks will give me something beyond water.

I think gut health is extremely important for health and for weight loss so I am happy to take Probiotic-10 for healthy intestinal flora. I have gotten away from eating yogurt lately and my fermented foods in general have been lacking because I haven’t had the time or desire to make them. This will help until I get some ferment batches going.

Biotin is an all around good supplement to take. It is a coenzyme and a B vitamin and it is great for nails and hair, which need some help. There is also some data out there to support that it might help decrease insulin resistance and my sugar habits of late are shocking frankly.

The bottle of vitamin d3 cream is just one more step to fighting my tendency to be vitamin d deficient. I am taking supplements but this lotion can’t help either. Its also silky smooth.

I feel I am armed and ready to take on this challenge and takes my first steps back to a healthier mind and a healthier body.

Gluten Free Soft Pretzels with Hemp Seeds

by Tiffany in Recipes

Making Soft Pretzels With Stand Mixer

I adore soft pretzels. Every time I walk by a place that sells soft pretzels in a mall or airport my traitorous body tries to convince me that I must have one. In days long past I even got sick several times at places like this (most likely due to improper cream cheese storage) but that never stopped me from eating them.

It wasn’t until I adopted a more whole foods lifestyle that I stopped eating them with any regularity. They became a guilty treat for once in a great while. Though I don’t feel too guilty making this soft pretzel recipe. It has gluten free flour (with no wheat or soy), organic hemp seeds with their omega 3s and 6s, pastured butter, and they are cooked with avocado oil. The main ingredients came from Now Foods.

Flour, Avocado oil, Hemp Seeds

MUCH healthier than any you could buy. They are also quite good with some cream cheese!

Gluten Free Soft Pretzels with Hemp Seeds

For the Dough:
2 1/2 cups gluten free flour
2 Tbs Now Foods toasted Hemp Seeds
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp sugar
2.25 tsp quick rise yeast
1 cup warm water

For the Top:
1/2 cup warm water
1 tbsp baking soda
avocado oil for greasing the sheet pan (or any vegetable oil)
coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
3 tbsp butter, melted

Mix all the dough ingredients together with a spatula and then let your stand mixer (with dough hook) knead for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with more flour and set aside to rise some place warm for 30 minutes.

Making Gluten free Soft Pretzels

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. After letting your dough sit for 30 minutes cut into 8 pieces and roll each piece into a long rope, on a lightly greased counter top. Grease your cookie sheet as well. Mix the baking soda and water together and after transforming the dough ropes into their pretzel shapes, dip them in the soda wash. Place them on the greased cookie sheet and sprinkle liberally with course sea salt.

Cook for 10-12 minutes and brush with butter upon removing them from the oven. Eat them warm and feel free to add cream cheese. Enjoy!

3 Ways to Help Make Your Home Eco-Friendly

by Tiffany in A Green Home

Green home Steps

Whether you’re a proud greenie, interested in long-term environmental solutions, or simply want to make a dint in your electricity bill, there are plenty of reasons to make your home eco-friendly. Have a look through some of the suggestions below and see what might work best for your home.

1. Invest in Solar Power

Few things are as overwhelmingly positive for the environment and for your incoming bills as solar power. Installing solar power panels at home is a relatively simple procedure, and while it may cost a little bit to install, your next power bill will show you exactly why it’s worthwhile. Harnessing the sun’s energy means you may need to change up a few habits. Putting the dishwasher on in the morning instead of when you go to bed or having a shower in the morning instead of the evening ensures you aren’t wasting valuable solar energy. To find solar energy solutions to suit your home, speak with a solar energy company like Absolute Energy Solutions to see what is available.

2. Say Hello to the Sun

If you’re serious about making your home more eco-friendly, it’s time to think about your heating and cooling techniques. Avoid using cost-heavy, energy-burning air-conditioning systems by embracing the weather and working your home to fit in with it. In winter time, find the side of the house where the sun first hits, and make sure all the blinds and curtains are wide open so the sun can filter in and warm the house. When the sun moves away, close the curtains and doors to stop the heat from dissipating. At night-time, close up any unused rooms – you’d be amazed at how much heat can be trapped by doing so. In summertime, keep blinds and curtains drawn during the day to minimise the effects of the sun, and throw open all your windows from late afternoon to catch any breezes.

3. Be Water-Wise

Water is one of the big things most people overlook, but being water-wise is a really great way to become eco-friendly. This includes everything from saving water, recycling water, and being aware of where your water (along with any mixed-in chemicals) goes. The first big water-wise tip is to be smart with your usage. Wash your car over the lawn, keep a bucket in the shower with you and use the water that is caught for your garden, and invest in a hose nozzle that restricts water flow. Nozzles can be found here to help you save water in your own home. You can also invest in timers to keep your showers shorter – just doing this can save thousands of litres of water every year. When you use chemicals (in the shower, when washing your car, and in the kitchen), remember all of them will eventually make their way through the drainage system to the natural waterways – think about what you’re using, and whenever you can, choose your chemicals with the environment in mind.

These are just a few simple tips that can make a big difference to any household. Have you used any of these? If so, let everyone know what worked well for you – or share any other tips you have – in the comments below.

Healthy Products for Healthy Living From Now Foods

by Tiffany in Natural Product Reviews

NOW Foods

The above is a collection of goodies I recently recieved from Now Foods as a #NOWWellness blog ambassador.

I have used many Now Foods products over the years so I felt it was a good fit for me and this blog. The products they sent are for the most part products I would buy myself any day of the week. A couple I might not have purchased but I am still happy to give them a try!

Perhaps most exciting for me are the avocado oil and the sweet almond oil. I make no secret of my adoration for essential oils and all their uses in creating DIY beauty products and home remedies. Avocado oil is my absolute favorite carrier oil so I know I will use every last drop. The same goes for the sweet almond oil. A carrier oil “carries” the beauty product or essential oil to broad area of the body. Imagine if you will, putting a drop or two of lavender oil on your fingers. How far will those drops of lavender go? How much skin can be covered? The answer is not much. This is why a carrier oil comes in handy. It dilutes the essential oil’s more potent components, and it allows you reach more skin with your homemade creations.

So why do I love avocado oil and almond oil? Well one of the biggies is that they both score low on the comedogenic ratings scale. “0” will not clog pores, “3” is moderate, and “5” indicates a high risk of clogged pores. Avocado oil and almond oil both rate a “2” which is moderately low. Neither one feels greasy after application either. No one wants to feel slippery all day!

So how am I using them already? Well I am using them to fill my glass roller bottles. I use a carrier oil, a few drops of my preferred essential oils and I have a ready to go, diluted, application method.

Now Foods avocado oil and almond oil

Next up I am excited to use the garlic infused coconut oil. Thank goodness it came to me as a solid though because I very nearly used it in brownies. They were saved because I was too lazy to heat it up and I used the avocado oil instead. Only later did I see the garlic part! That would have been awkward. The toasted hemp seeds will go fast I think and the tri colored quinoa sounds delish! I can’t wait to dig further into the #NowWellness goodies.
