I came across a meme on Facebook recently that stated shouldn’t do anything, wear anything, buy anything, eat anything, or keep anything unless it makes you feel fabulous. I immediately understood the intent of the message and fell in love with it. I wholeheartedly agree that THIS is the way to live. Of course a few did not quite understand and got argumentative stating that some things in life are hard and unenjoyable yet have to be done like housework or bills. Others stated that bad for you foods (ie junk foods) were the most likely foods to make them feel fabulous. While I understand somewhat what they were saying, I have to disagree.
If you dread something find a way around it or change your attitude about it. If something doesn’t spark joy for you, don’t buy it, that is money wasted. Only wear clothes that makes you feel good about yourself. Eat foods that make you feel good mentally as well as physically…ie that twinkie might satisfy a craving and make you feel good for a few seconds but guilt and bloating later on don’t feel fabulous. Let go of things that make you feel less than fabulous and keep the ones that do. For me this less about being a Diva who always wants to feel fabulous and more about being intentional, mindful, grateful, and happy.
In my own experience there are many ways you tackle making things like housekeeping and laundry more joyful. One of those ways might be outsourcing it if you can but other ways involve skillful and clever mastery of these things. When you develop an efficient system that works well without too much lost time you take pride in that was once a drudgery. Pride in a job well done makes you feel fabulous no? FlyLady and Konmari are examples of successful methods for many people. Keep reaching if you still feel drudgery and be at peace with the fact that you will not feel 100% fabulous about housework all the time.
But what about bills? Can you feel fabulous while paying bills? Absolutely!
This is one of those areas where a mindset change may be in order. Paying bills is a perfect opportunity to practice gratitude for everything that you have. You have a place to live, a car, lights and utilities, a food budget, a smartphone, an education, a recreation budget, money to see Doctors, and hopefully an emergency account to keep you safe from whatever comes your way.
Paying household bills is you telling your money where to go and for whose benefit. It allows you to control the destination of your life, and its comfort level. If you struggle being grateful for bills this is usually a signal that your money has been permitted to control you rather than you control it and feeling out of control does not feel fabulous, I agree with that. If this is the case than practicing gratitude is still important but must be worked on in tandem with other things such as forming or tightening up a budget, getting frivolous spending under control, and perhaps, making some hard choices to find a way to live within your means. When you feel at peace with your money and grateful for it, you will begin to feel fabulous.
