The Feast Nearby

By Tiffany 2 Comments

As is normal this time of year, I am completely head over heels in love with local food. My garden is coming along nicely and I have tiny cauliflower, tomatoes, and sugar snap peas already. My city's farmer's market starts this Thursday and my organic delivery box is ripe with farm fresh produce and pastured eggs. It is about this time that I like to re-read my fave local food memoirs like This Organic Life, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. So of course when I saw a local foodie book at my … [Read more...]

By Tiffany 13 Comments

A new study has been released by Enviromental Health Perspectives that addresses ways to reduce exposure to BPA and DEHP (bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) by changing our dietary shopping practices. Essentially it evaluated exposure contribution by food packaging (canned foods and foods wrapped in plastic) and tested urine levels of BPA and DEHP metabolites before, during, and after "fresh foods" interventions. There were 20 participants in five families who were studied and they were self reported … [Read more...]

How to Make Kefir

By Tiffany 10 Comments

If you have been around any traditional foods / nourishing traditions enthusiasts then no doubt you have heard them sing the praises of Kefir. What exactly is it though and how do you make it at home? Kefir grains are actually a gelatinous grouping of bacteria and yeasts that grow during the process of fermentation. The grains themselves look very much like tiny cauliflower heads but they can turn milk, or other beverages into a drink that is deliciously sour and sparkling, charged naturally … [Read more...]

How to be a savvy organic shopper

By Tiffany 1 Comment

Reprinted from the Pocono Record July 06, 2006 YONKERS, N.Y. — An investigation Consumer Reports has found that shoppers don't need to buy organic foods across the board to get added health value. The report tells shoppers which organic products are worth seeking out — and which ones are not. Consumers can pass on organic seafood and shampoo, for example, because their labels can be misleading. The full investigation appeared in the February issue of Consumer Reports. The complete … [Read more...]
