We aren't all that big on desserts around here. I think that may be because we live within 15 minutes of what has been called America's best ice cream... the local artisan creations from Jeni's. I have no problem loading the family into the car and making a trip there once or twice a week but recently we decided that needed to change some. We aren't worried about our health or the size of our jeans. Rather we are trying to reduce the "dining out" portion of our monthly budget. Dagnabit! Since we … [Read more...]
Summer Snacking – Adult Version
When the weather is warm and I am not in the mood for a green smoothie I make the next best thing... a milkshake. Nosh on some chocolate on the side and I am heaven sent. Yum! This is a raw, vegan "mylkshake" made from unsweetened almond milk. I added a bit of Thai coconut sugar, a ripe banana, some vanilla, and ice cubes. It is frothy and delicious. I think the Ball jar and glass straw just add a little something too. In the bowl is handful of Nativas Naturals Cacao Goji Power Snacks. I … [Read more...]
Keeping Cool in the Kitchen
Cooks know that as the temperatures outside increases, the desire to cook decreases. It has already hit me full force... I don't want to heat the kitchen by using my oven at all. And it isn’t due to lack of wanting to cook I just have the need to keep our home as cool as possible. We don't run our air conditioner willy nilly because we don't want to be energy hogs.. or spend extra money on energy bills. This is why baking is done mostly in the winter months and cool dishes are served during the … [Read more...]
Weed Control Fabric for Gardening
With all the rain here lately it has meant that our seedlings and transplants took a bit longer to get outside. That was okay with us because my husband couldn't build my raised bed until this past week either. Since we have a smaller, open yard now we decided to grow food in a couple raised beds (building them ourselves) and in pots and planters on our backyard deck. We will be growing heirloom varieties of tomato, peppers, sugar snap peas, snow peas, lettuce greens, and carrots. Yum! The … [Read more...]
Mojito Raspberry Paletas
Hot on the trail of my cool and healthy summer treats post, I have a delicious recipe to share: Mojito Rasberry Paletas! Paletas are fruit pops sold in Mexico... I used to get them as a kid in border towns (grew up in Arizona). Unlike fruit "flavored" popsicles, paletas have big juicy chunks of fruit in them. My favorite as a child was always pineapple or coconut with big chunks of the fruit inside. Yum! Yesterday I tried my hand at making some and combined the ever delicious taste of a … [Read more...]
