What is Urban Homesteading? Can Anyone Do It?

By Tiffany Leave a Comment

A frequent question I get from newbies to a more self sufficient lifestyle...is what exactly is a homestead? What does it mean to be a homesteader? If you google this question you will come up with many different answers. For me the most simplistic way to describe what I mean when I refer to homesteading, having a homestead, and being a homesteader is this... What is Urban Homesteading? A homestead is a productive home, a home that brings value. To be a homesteader is to work within or around … [Read more...]

The Benefits of Grass Fed and Pastured Animal Products

By Tiffany 6 Comments

There is an old saying that “you are what you eat”. We hear it often and maybe it has begin to become a bit watered down (by overuse) but really it is quite a truthful statement. Nutritionists like to repeat this quote over and over again to get across to people that food choices are directly linked to our health and to our quality of life. The food that we eat and all of the nutrients contained therein are what provide the building blocks for new cell growth. Cells die off daily and are … [Read more...]

Eco Wrap – TreeHugger, Vanity Fair, and Monsanto

By Tiffany 7 Comments

TGIF! Have an awesome weekend everyone! Woot! This week I was named as one of TreeHugger.com's favorite greens of the week! They are a huge blog (the big daddy of green) with a huge readership so I am honored. You can see their banner with my blog in it at the bottom of this post. I received a very useful link from a new Twitter friend this week which I think nicely sums up the ways you can reduce waste. I especially like #8. Vanity Fair has done it again. Another awesome green issue! … [Read more...]

Just another reason to eat local

Grass fed beef is in trouble. The Agriculture Department has proposed a standard for grass-fed meat that doesn't say animals need pasture and that broadly defines grass to include things like leftovers from harvested crops. This proposal is so loose that it would let more conventional ranchers slap a grass-fed label their beef, too. This is exacty what they are shooting for of course, so that grass fed beef will be a term that means nothing anymore. Big agricorp doesn't want to let their cows … [Read more...]

Horizon is Deceiving Consumers

By Tiffany Leave a Comment

Well, this is not surprising. Horizon is being sued for their industrialized organic farming practices. As I have mentioned in other posts I am not very keen on supporting a company like Horizon....even if they are organic....which of course is up for debate as well. I only eat organic foods myself but I am very opposed to big agricorp coming in and industrializing the process...finding USDA loopholes, outsourcing our food to other countries, using factory feedlots where animals never see the … [Read more...]
