{"id":16453,"date":"2014-09-09T20:53:16","date_gmt":"2014-09-09T20:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naturemoms.com\/blog\/?p=16453"},"modified":"2014-09-09T20:53:16","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T20:53:16","slug":"plastic-what-the-numbers-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naturemoms.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/09\/plastic-what-the-numbers-mean\/","title":{"rendered":"Plastic &#8211; What the Numbers Mean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16454\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/naturemoms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Plastic-What-the-Numbers-Mean-346x520.png\" alt=\"Plastic - What the Numbers Mean\" width=\"218\" height=\"328\" \/>In recent years there has been coverage and discussion on the dangers of plastics and in particular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturemoms.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/04\/bpa-free-safe-sippy-cups\/\">bisphenol A\u00a0 or BPA<\/a> and PVC (polyvinyl chloride).\u00a0 Recent studies have showed that very low doses of some of these common plastics ingredients may cause genetic abnormalities, birth defects and brain damage.<\/p>\n<p>These plastics have also exhibited the ability to leach certain chemicals into foods that they come into contact with, especially when exposed to high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>So how do we find out what kinds of plastics are in the materials we touch or use each day? If you take a look at the bottom of plastic bottles, containers or shopping bags you\u2019ll find numbers that can give you an idea of what you\u2019re dealing with.\u00a0 First you have to know what the numbers mean.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a brief primer.<\/p>\n<p>#1 <strong>PETE or PET<\/strong> (polyethylene terephthalate): used for most clear beverage bottles.<\/p>\n<p>#2 <strong>HDPE<\/strong> (high density polyethylene): used for \u201ccloudy\u201d milk and water jugs, opaque food bottles.<\/p>\n<p>#3 <strong>PVC or V<\/strong> (polyvinyl chloride): used in some cling wraps, inflatable toys, mattress covers, <a href=\"https:\/\/naturemoms.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/01\/non-toxic-shower-curtains-and-bath-toys\/\">shower curtains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>#4 <strong>LDPE<\/strong> (low density polyethylene): used in food storage bags and some \u201csoft\u201d bottles.<\/p>\n<p>#5 <strong>PP<\/strong> (polypropylene): used in rigid containers, including some baby bottles and some cups and bowls.<\/p>\n<p>#6 <strong>PS<\/strong> (polystyrene):\u00a0 used in foam containers with those \u201cclaim-shell\u201d tops, meat and turkey trays, and in its rigid form, clear take-out containers, some plastic cutlery and cups.\u00a0 Polystyrene may leach styrene into food it comes into contact with.\u00a0 Styrene is also considered a possible human carcinogen by the World Health Organization\u2019s International Agency for Research and Cancer.<\/p>\n<p>#7 <strong>Other<\/strong> (usually polycarbonate): used in 5-gallon water bottles, some baby bottles, some metal can linings.\u00a0 Polycarbonate can release its primary building block, bisphenol A\u2014a suspected hormone disrupter\u2014into liquids and foods.<\/p>\n<p>Not all plastic products are labeled with a number.\u00a0 If you\u2019re unsure don\u2019t hesitate to call the manufacturer directly. Also look on food product packaging for toll-free telephone numbers where consumers can ask questions.<\/p>\n<p>Points to keep in mind:<\/p>\n<p>1. Foods such as cheese and meat are perfect receptors for potentially harmful chemicals that can leach from plastics.<\/p>\n<p>2. Heating food in plastics can increase leaching.<\/p>\n<p>3.
