Actually the bigger dilemma for me is the fact that I buy nasty, factory farmed, bleached white eggs to make the dye job easier but we consider the paint\/dye as well. Since my beautiful pastured brown and green eggs won&#8217;t dye well (we&#8217;ve tried) we buy the conventional white ones for this endeavor and we don&#8217;t eat them. Some day we may get around to trying to blow the yolks out so we can reuse the eggs but until that time we use one of three ways to get eggcellent color.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Dying Easter Eggs With Natural Homemade Food Dyes<\/h3>\n<p>Most people color their\u00a0eggs with store bought egg\u00a0kits that contain\u00a0dyes made from petrochemicals, but in times past\u00a0eggs were colored with plant materials found in nature. It&#8217;s fun to get back to the basics!<\/p>\n<p>To\u00a0dye eggs with natural coloring put raw, white-shelled\u00a0eggs in a pan and cover with water and a teaspoon of white vinegar. Add your coloring agent and bring to a boil and then let the\u00a0eggs simmer for 15 minutes. Rinse and allow to cool.<\/p>\n<p>You can also hard boil them first and then fill glass jars with water and the coloring agent, putting the jars in the microwave for 2-3 minutes and then stirring. Then allow the\u00a0eggs to sit in the jars overnight.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>pink and red<\/strong> colored\u00a0eggs use cranberry juice, beets, or raspberries.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>yellow<\/strong>\u00a0eggs use saffron or tumeric<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>purple<\/strong>\u00a0eggs use red wine.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>blue<\/strong>\u00a0eggs use red\u00a0cabbage\u00a0leaves or blueberries.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>brown<\/strong>\u00a0eggs use grape juice, rosehip tea, or coffee.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>orange<\/strong>\u00a0eggs use yellow onion skins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/naturemoms.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/06\/eco-eggs-natural-easter-egg-dyes\/eco-easter-eggs-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"eco easter eggs kit\" src=\"https:\/\/naturemoms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/eco-easter-eggs-1-520x348.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"348\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Dying Easter Eggs With Natural Store Bought Dyes<\/h3>\n<p>Our favorite natural egg dying kit is <a href=\"https:\/\/naturemoms.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/06\/eco-eggs-natural-easter-egg-dyes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eco Eggs<\/a>\u00a0(see above photo). \u00a0Gorgeous no?<\/p>\n<p>The dyes are made using natural plant, fruit, and vegetable extracts. Specifically we used the\u00a0<a id=\"static_txt_preview\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004Q02YTA\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=natureblog-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B004Q02YTA\" target=\"_blank\">Glob All Natural Paint Pigments Set<\/a>. You can use them for egg painting as well as regular painting and even tinting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturemoms.com\/play-dough-recipes.html\" target=\"_blank\">natural play dough<\/a>. The set has four colors.. basil, lemon verbena, pomegranate, and berry blue. The powders are all crafted from fruits, vegetables, flowers, and spices. Just add water and you have paint. They even smell like the yummy foods\/plants used to make them!<\/p>\n<p>The eggs in the top photo are what we ended up with. I think for more perfect photo worthy eggs the Eco Eggs dye is better but for kiddie fun the Glob paints are tops. My kids had a blast mixing the paints and then hand painting their eggs.
