Last week it was Fischer Price toys and now it is Mattel that is recalling Chinese made toys that are contaminated with lead paint. I have a feeling this won’t be the last of these stories we hear.
No doubt it was due to all this frenzy that I got an email from GreenFeet, an online retailer of green goods, about their lead testing kit. This fast, accurate, and reliable lead test kit helps you to keep your family safe as it detects lead on any surface in seconds. Test for lead on bath tubs, toys, paint, dust, soil, cribs, mini-blinds, furniture, dinnerware, porcelain, holiday lights, computer and phone cords, antiques and plumbing. If the swab tip turns pink or red, lead is present…it is that easy.
This is a good reminder that we may have lead lurking in other places in our homes and not just the toy box. According to the site 38 million homes have lead in them…is yours one of them?
I also found a great new blog called Not China Made. This blog addresses the problems associated with buying Chinese made products (it extends waaaay beyond lead paint) and it links to many US alternatives. Be sure to check it out.
Hi – I’ve been blogging on the toy recall in China since it started unfolding in July. I offer several policy options at my blog (talking to the toystore, contacting your member of Congress, etc.). But I’m also trying to help moms find eco-friendly toys, not just online but in their communities. Can you let your readers know? I’ll list local safe toy manufacturers as well as Internet options. Thanks! Diane MacEachern, http://www.dianesbiggreenpurse.com
