I already gave you the low-down on safe insect repellents but I have one more to add now. For the past couple of weeks we have been using EcoSMART Insect Repellent and I have to say…it works. This product is designed to repel mosquitoes, gnats, ticks, and more all without using harsh chemicals like DEET. We are all about using safer products here so were happy to give EcoSMART a test drive. We do really need it here in central Ohio too. As soon as it hits 5:00 PM or so, the mosquitoes come out with a vengeance.
What I liked the most about this product is that it really does work for hours…like it says on the packaging. ;) With some others we tried I noticed that you have to keep reapplying every 30 minutes or so. This product has a VERY strong smell when you spray it so make sure to spray outside. It was a pleasant smell, just very strong. It reminded me of black licorice.
This powerful, all natural, and nontoxic formula is made from organic plant oils (Rosemary, Cinnamon, Lemongrass). It is safe to use on the entire family, including small children and infants. To apply you just hold the spray bottle 6 to 8 inches from skin and spray with a slow sweeping motion. Use just enough repellent to cover exposed skin and/or clothing. To apply to your face, spray you palm and rub on.
So far I like this one the best of those we have tried. Available at Amazon.com.
I have been WAITING for this one! My son is allergic to bug bites (it’s AWFUL!) and we have tried everything. I’m always on the lookout for natural repellants, but so far the only thing that really works is DEET. I will definitely be trying this. Thanks for the review.
You read my mind! I was going to do an online search tonight for an insect repellant. I’ll order this one immediately. Thanks so much for your information!
I’m with you being in Michigan, Northern. Shoot, it’s WAY before five. What are you talkin’ about? So I say, http://www.kidsafepestcontrol.blogspot.com/
Best costumers are in Alaska. Happy to send you a sample, Tiffany, for review.
thanks for this review! my son gets a terrible allergic reaction to mosquito bites and I have been looking for some good green repellents.
I have been told that just growing some catnip in the backyard and then rubbing on when you need it works well also. Cheaper and more natural, maybe??
Carla, I’ve also heard that catnip works well when you just pick it and rub the leaves on yourself. Lemon balm works the same way.
I keep hearing that two others alternatives work, but have not tried them. I was wondering if anyone has and if they work. The first one is simply rubbing a dryer fabric softner sheet on your clothes and the second is spraying your skin with Listerine.
I was wondering how folks think this product compares to Bite Blocker. That’s the one made from a derivative of tomatoes (although they aren’t really marketing that aspect). I have tried Bite Blocker and it does work, but the smell is pretty awful. I’d kind of describe it like Ivory soap x10. I love the smell of licorice, so I may have to give this one a try. Appreciate anyone’s feedback!
