Second Hand Finds for the Week

I had an awesome week for finding/buying second hand things I have long been looking for this week. The thrift store near my home had this awesome picnic basket for only $4. It is sturdy and in very good condition. It came with 4 plastic plates, plastic cups, and plastic utensils that appear to be new in package. I plan on donating those items back to the thrift store and putting light weight, stainless steel plates and tumblers in their place. Regular silverware in cloth napkins will work for utensils. I have been looking for a good picnic basket for awhile so I am super happy.

The other item is a vintage nut grinder. I wanted to get a nut grinder for many months but I didn’t want a modern electric one that looks more like a coffee grinder. I don’t have a coffee grinder either since I don’t drink coffee. My Vita-Mix chews the nuts up a bit too much for my liking. What I really wanted was one of those glass and steel crank grinders like my grandma used so I decided to look on eBay. The first one I found was rusty but further down the list I found the perfect one. It looks brand spanking new!

Old fashioned, vintage nut grinder

The nuts go in the glass jar whole and the crank grinds them into small chunks up using steel blades. you can take the top off and just grind over top of your meal or you can grind them into the cup which is also measures them for recipes. Its just like my moms old nut grinder but mine is in a lot better shape and I only paid $12 including shipping. The memories of Sunday mornings long ago spent crushing up pecans for mom’s homemade waffles makes it worth every penny.

Have you found any great, used, items this week?

  1. I hit Goodwill just yesterday and found a school uniform shirt for my daughter and some beautiful baskets to use for holiday gift baskets.

I bought a similar picnic basketto yours last summer for a family trip to Tennessee. But mine have hard plastic plates and cups but it is still a great basket. They retail brand new for $80 and up, I know I priced them out. I found one on ebay and spent less than $15 with shipping then got mad because the local Salvation Army had one a few weeks later for $2 but it was missing pieces and had some dents in the wicker.

I love treasure hunting at Thrift Stores.

Some people think it’s icky. I love it and always feel like I am on a treasure hunt.

You’re always lucky to get nice and fuzzy items like that! Those items are quite expensive if purchase on its original price. Good thing, you have found a treasure. Keep posting!

I’ve had a great month with thrift store shopping. I bought 2 board games in great condition for less than $4 each. The Value Village in my city does a 50% off day twice a year. At their most recent one, two weeks ago, I scored big! I bought 20 items of children’s clothing for $44 – including numerous medium sized boys button down and polo shirts in excellent condition. Some of them won’t fit him for another year, but at that price it sure helps to grab them when you see them. There is a kidswap on facebook in many communities, where people post photos of their garage sale items, from clothing to toys to strollers. On that, I found a used electronic toy for my kids – not the latest & greatest but my children will think it’s fabulous. It’s discontinued and so people sell it for cheap now. I have also bought alot of clothing from that site.
