5 Cleansing Plant-Based Skincare Ingredients

By Tiffany Leave a Comment

Plant-based skincare has become increasingly popular as people become ever more conscious of what they put on their faces, and how each product can affect the environment. Brands like Typology have become household names due to their wide selections of products that are plant-based and chemical-free.

With so many possible ingredients going into these products though, it is important to choose the right options for addressing your skin concerns. If you want to pick out a plant-based cleanser with great antibacterial and antifungal properties, then here are the few natural ingredients you should be looking for:

Green tea

Green tea extract rose to popularity because it is commonly used in East Asian skincare. A study on the Beneficial Effects of Green Tea EGCG on Skin Wound Healing found that the plant compound found in the leaves can reduce inflammation, fight off bacteria and fungus, as well as minimize scarring. It can also clear pores of dead cells and excess sebum. Using a cleanser with this ingredient will ensure that your skin will be rid of all dirt and build-up.

Evening primrose

Known as a flowering plant, evening primrose is found all over the world but is native to central and eastern North America. It has been used to treat many skin conditions, such as allergies, inflammation, and bruising. A past article on ‘Evening Primrose Oil for Healthier Skin’ explains that it contains omega-6 fatty acids, which can help fight even the most deeply rooted skin infections –– making it perfect for those with chronic dermatological illnesses. While it is not yet a mainstream ingredient in cleansers, you can incorporate a few drops of this oil into your face wash to absorb the benefits of the plant.

Rosemary

Those who suffer from breakouts may be familiar with rosemary. This is a common ingredient in skincare routines for acne. It is also a great natural repellent against bacteria and viruses. A post on 10 ways to firm and tighten your skin by SymptomFind notes that rosemary has many antioxidant properties which can help clear skin as well as promote the production of fibroblasts. While it can be found in numerous products (like toners and creams), its properties make it the perfect ingredient for cleansers. It is easily accessible, making it the perfect ingredient for those who are still trying to figure out what products work best for them.

Aloe vera

Insider highlights how aloe vera is best known for its hydrating properties, but it is also a great ingredient for cleansers. Aside from being able to bring back skin moisture, it can also soothe irritation and is effective in treating bacterial and fungal infections. It can also exfoliate your skin, get rid of dead cells, and unclog pores. Using a face wash with aloe vera as an active ingredient will ensure that the product you are using is gentle while still being effective.

Cocoa powder

While cocoa is commonly used in food, it is also a rising ingredient in skincare. Something that most people don’t know, however, is that cocoa beans are rich in antioxidants. This means they can help rid your body of impurities and environmental stressors. Cocoa is the perfect ingredient for those who are commonly exposed to pollution. Though not many brands have products that contain cocoa powder, it is easy to add milk, salt, and warm water to the ingredient to create a paste that will be able to clean your skin and make it smoother.

All things considered, plant-based skincare products are highly beneficial and can be more effective than their synthetic chemical counterparts. They’re easier to absorb into the skin and less irritating.
