Lice MD – Safer Lice Removal

Whew! Luckily I have never had to deal with lice. That is a really good thing because generally I am not a fan of bugs. I was talking to someone about lice recently because her children all had them and she mentioned how she hated putting pesticides on their heads. I never thought about that before but yes I guess it does make sense that pest removal chemicals would be in a conventional lice removal product. Eww! Why not just spray their heads with a can of RAID?

I wondered if there was anything better commerically available and one of the front runners I found is Lice MD. It eliminates lice 10 in minutes without harmful pesticides and it is completely odorless. The ingredients list is pretty similar to a bottle of shampoo but without foaming agents so Lice MD is very slippery like a lotion.

There are still so many parents that would not make a homemade lice treatment but would opt for peace of mind in a bottle and if the school nurse is doing the treatment you know they won’t be using a make-your-own recipe,  so I am happy that there is something safer for them.

For parents more interested in the au naturale route here is a link for natural lice remedies.

I dealt with a lice epidemic last year. My daughter got it 4x and my son once. (the whole 4xthing is a long story) First RID and whatever other chemical junk they sell does NOT work. You know what works? Extra Strenght Denorex. Of course I find this out on the final battle. I don’t know if it’s a green product, but anything is better than what is in that RID can. After I used the Denorex I would do a vinegar wash to loosen up the nits. I make my kids use the Denorex once a week now. I haven’t had an infection since. I don’t think spraying Raid on a child’s head would kill these things either. (not that anyone would do that)

They have developed some type of super hair dryer that schools will have access too. It kills them in about 20 minutes.

Oh my!! yes this is the second time we have encounterd head lice (YUK) but it is a part of life i guess, now if any of these product worked there would be no lice at all!!(extinct) yeah we all wish … i found that any kind of oil (minieral or veg) and vinager works well however have fun getting the oil out 6 washes later if you have hair like myself or my kids!! we have been told if you use a very hot hair straightener (flat iron) the lice or nits cannot withstand the heat and die !!yee haa!! so save yourself from chemical product (cancer causing) and the stress of washing your hair until it falls out and invest in a straightener (for you girls anyway) my boy let me straighten his hair!!! so best of luck to everyone who has to deal with these nasty little insects!!! cheers chris

Thats a great idea!! I’m going to start spraying my kids’ heads with Raid once a week to make sure that they dont contract lice.

      Thanks for the suggestion!

OMG! We had our first bought with lice last year. Our daughter’s friend got it during the last weeks of summer camp then just a few weeks into school our daughter got it. This had to be one of the worst experiences we’ve had to deal with. I’ve never had lice myself but I can empathise with what my daughter was going through. First the itching and irritation of her scalp. Then there was the horrible stench of RID in her hair. Which, by the way, didn’t do it’s job 100%. We did several shampooings with that, thought we had them all, took her back to school to find out she still had nits. Took her back home and finally put some good ole vasoline in her hair to loosen it all up. The next battle was removing the vasoline from her hair. We tried Dawn dishwashing liquid about 3 times. So much for cutting the grease. Then a friend said try beer. Nope, still greasy. Finally I bought a clarifying shampoo and that did the trick. God willing, we won’t have this problem ever again. A suggestion from the woman that cuts our children’s hair, put baby oil (or a safe oil of your choice) in there hair once a month and leave it in overnight. Then wash out. This should coat the hair shaft and act as an inhibitor for the little “buggers.” If anyone else has any suggestions on how to keep them away, I’d be happy to hear from ya.

tea tree oil!! it works wonders on keeping them out!! my daughter is in the third grade and got them. I did all the normal things to get lice free. and i was telling my friend and she told me to put the oil in her hair and put a few drops in her shampoo.

I suggest the Robi Comb. It’s a little battery-operated comb that you run through dry hair. It makes a noise that attracts them, and then shocks them. It ended a two-month battle with them at my house.

Any kind of essential oil works then wrap it up and apply heat (sun, dryer, etc) and wash. Olive, coconut, lavender, tea tree, etc. will suffocate the critters and won’t put any kind of chemicals on your hair. Plus you get a nice condition with yummy smell. It really works.

  5. There’s an Australian brand called Ecokid (http://www.ecokid.com.au/) which makes lice-preventing shampoo, conditioner, leave-in tonic, a couple of styling products, and a lice bomb. They only have Australian and New Zealand stockists listed on their website, but you can email them regarding international stockists. Email address: intlstockists@ecokid.com.au

I have a 2 year old in day care and we just found out yesterday she has lice. I have done battle with these bugs before and after using expensive shampoos found that mayo does the trick. I simply apply mayonnaise and place a shower cap on their head and leave on for at least 8 hours repeat if necessary. The mayo suffocates them and makes it difficult to move around.

    • myriam

i saw what you wrote about the mayo after 8 hours what do you you put in the hair to get the mayo smell out

HHow similar is licemd to rid?

This is nice, but after I did it with my child, her hair was VERY VERY oily and it took her a week of showers every night to get it out. But otherwise its pretty good. Some people use a cup of Listerine and and white vinegar and mix it together and put a clear plastic shower cap to throw away and keep it in for 3-4 hours. Or you can use mayonnaise and its very nice because the white part of it shows the lice and it makes your hair very very shiny :)
