Here is another green book review for you. This one is especially for women and it was a great read. It is Green Chic: Saving the Earth in Style by Christie Matheson.
Basically I thought this book might be kind of like a green guide for those “Sex in the City” types…eco fashionistas… but it is for all women. I love the fact that it doesn’t concentrate so much on green goodies and stuff you can buy. Instead it notes that to be truly green we must buy less and use less and our every actions are just as important. Being eco conscious is sexy.
It starts off with “the small stuff” and all the little ways we can make a difference that add up in the end. It talks about eating sustainably and how this leads to a healthier diet for the body too. But the BEST part of this book was the stuff that was specific to women that you might not read about so much in a green book geared toward all sexes. It concentrates heavily on the impact of manicures and pedicures, hair care products, toiletries, makeup, razors, and even tampons. And of course it talks about how you don’t have to do without cute clothes, purses, and shoes if you want to live a little greener. There are tons of earth friendly options out there…even some that don’t require buying brand new.
My second favorite part of the book was the section on green parties. It had lots of great ideas for greening special occasions.
The end of the book is filled with links to the author’s favorites green products and resources.
I wondered if I would enjoy the book because the woman that gets a weekly massage along with a manicure, pedi, and Brazilian wax while wearing Jimmy Choos and carrying a Fendi…I don’t identify with that woman. But Green Chic is a nice read for ALL women. Even this one…who would rather wear torn jeans, a vintage Doors T-shirt, and flip flops. Thanks Christie for giving me the opportunity to read it!
