In addition to seeing a slew of garage sales and yard sales every Friday I also see a variety of roadside markets for fresh local produce. Today was no exception and I was very happy to see them since a tornado decided to ruin the farmer’s market yesterday. I found organic sweet corn grown and sold by a 12 year old boy (I bought 3 dozen), red and yellow tomatoes, squash, and strawberries. The first thing I dug into was the yellow tomatoes. They were incredibly sweet and a true summer delight. I just sliced them up and sprinkled with a little salt and voila…yummy!
There is nothing like eating local and eating seasonally. I really think that nature knows best and everything we need for health comes to us exactly when we need it.
So what is available locally where you live right now?
Right now tomatos, corn, and melons are everywhere. Though I’m excited that my pumpkins are starting to orange up a little.
LOVE your blog! Informative and delightful to read. I have talked my friends into eating locally. So they have transformed a little patch of green in front of their patio into their own little farmer’s market. They have invited us to a dinner made with fresh produce from their own mini famer’s market. How cool is that!!
Ooh I just did a post on our Farmer’s Market and on Monday I am doing a whole week’s worth of menus about stuff I bought there. Right now a ton of stuff is available, like tomatoes, squash (summer, zucchini, pattypan), peaches, lots of herbs, garlic, peppers (all kinds), lettuce, cucumbers, onions.. hmm I am sure I am forgetting something because there is so much to remember!
