Small Scale Aquaponics – Growing Greens With a Fish Tank

By Tiffany 11 Comments

One of the biggest hopes you can have as a mom and an environmentalist is that your kids will want to take up your causes as they grow and mature. I could not be prouder of my oldest child (nearly 14) as he grows into a stellar young man. He is kind, empathetic, smart, a great cook and fisherman, and very much interested in sustainability and homesteading practices. He helps me in the garden and listens relentlessly to my babbling about political issues, food integrity, and saving the … [Read more...]

5 Minute Raspberry Spinach Sorbet

By Tiffany 5 Comments

Looking for a cool summer treat that is easier than churning ice cream for hours and healthier than the stuff the ice man sells? This quickie sorbet is tasty, refreshing, healthy, and kid approved. I love that is so easy and fast to make as well. When the kids come inside after a long day playing outside or they finish up a sweaty session at their CrossFit Kids class I can make this up in a flash and not worry about unhealthy ingredients. In fact this sorbet has greens in it! It may be Popeye's … [Read more...]

The folks at Zico sent me a case of their coconut water a few weeks back. I was excited to try some coconut water pre and post workout because it seems to be all the rage right now. Fitness bloggers are talking about it and pics of celebrities leaving the gym with a bottle or sippy box in their hand are everywhere. The protein bar thing didn't work out so well when I decided to get in THAT fad but this seemed relatively harmless. Coconut water as it appears in these products is just the water … [Read more...]

Does Food Really Matter?

By Tiffany 20 Comments

This morning I watched an incredible documentary called Food Matters. I was enthralled from the first few opening seconds and hooked until the credits. I even watched the credits because they had some background music lyrics that were interesting too. This film is all about the “you are what you eat” concept. Doctors today don’t receive very much training in nutrition and most patients believe there is a pill that cures everything. IMO and the opinion of the makers of this film…that is … [Read more...]

Mean Green Machine Smoothie

By Tiffany 1 Comment

This smoothie is full of antioxidant rich foods like greens, berries, kiwi, and flax, making it a powerful and flavorful way to start the day. Kids love the unusual color. Makes 4 servings 1 (10oz) package of frozen mixed berries 2 green kale leaves, washed and chopped 1 and 1/2 cups apple juice or filtered water 1 mango, peeled and cubed 1 kiwi peeled and cubed 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed Place all ingredients in a blender - I suggest the VitaMix - :) and process until smooth and … [Read more...]
