The Legal Aspects of Homeschooling
Did you know that at least one state requires a
homeschool parent to have
a degree in order to be considered qualified enough to homeschool
through the high school years? No two states’ homeschool laws are
exactly alike.
The laws are as varied from state to state as the weather is from
Texas to Alaska. Some states require an annual 'notice of intent to
homeschool'-which is basically a letter informing the school
district where you live that you plan to homeschool. Some states
require no notification. Some states have high moderation and some
do not.
What is the compulsory attendance age in your state?
What do you do if you receive a letter from a school official
informing you that your homeschool is being terminated? Do you know
your rights? Do you know how to respond if an official from the
public school district arrives at your door making demands?
If you're a beginning homeschool parent, the very
first thing you should do before attempting to homeschool is to
check out the laws in your state pertaining to home education. You
cannot afford to be an uninformed homeschool parent. Know the law,
know your rights.
Often, school officials don't know the laws in their own state when
it comes to the legalities of homeschool. If they don't know and you
don't know...you can see how much trouble that could certainly stir
up!
All
state laws pertaining to homeschool are available to you free of
charge simply by searching online or by visiting your local library.
You can also find veteran homeschool parents through local
organizations who can help guide you as to what the law is in your
area. If you’re unsure as to the meaning of the law, don’t be afraid
to ask someone to clarify.
Get involved with understanding the law, how it works, how it
pertains to your rights as a homeschool family. Learn about House
Bills that could be harmful to your rights and find out what you can
do to take action to protect your rights.
In fact, while teaching a homeschool lesson on government, you might
find it helpful to include a section on your state laws regarding
homeschool.
