No surprise here but bleach is not very good for the environement. Adding chlorine (in conventional bleach) to an organic-rich waste stream (like rinse water) leads to the formation of environmentally hazardous byproducts, such as dioxins. Dioxins are carcinogenic.
But if chlorine is bad then how do you get your laundry looking bright and white? Well, truthfully I am not so concerned with my duds looking super pearly but I think the following product has potential just the same.
Drop that noxious Clorox!” screams a headline in last May’s issue of Wired magazine as they introduce Samsung’s newest innovation: the SilverCare Washing Machine ($1,300; www.samsung.com), which utilizes silver ions to disinfect clothing and kill odor-causing bacteria. This fabulous piece of machinery sterilizes clothes so gently, says its manufacturer, that you can wash everything from baby blankets to delicates AND use cold water, thereby consuming less energy.
So if you are in the market for a new washing machine then maybe look into a eco-friendly, chemical-free machine that truly helps the earth.
