Haven’t blogged in a couple days. Life took precedence for a bit, LOL. On Monday my daughter started school. She is going to a nice albeit a bit uptight private school. So far she really likes it. But I swear after ONE day they took my precious Paige and sent home Hannah Montana. She has become obsessed with fashion and what clothes she wears to school, the “right” shoes, the nicest looking barrettes, etc. I wear flip-flops, T-shirts, no makeup, and my hair is boy-short so I don’t even have to comb it. I am not exactly setting an example for my daughter to be a fashionista but I guess I just couldn’t win after she spent a few days with schoolmates.
At dinner last night she was telling me how two girls had the exact same socks (gasp!), two other girls had nice bracelets, and one girl had a shirt that was slightly prettier than hers. She also explained that she only wants to wear “fancy” clothes to school. I asked why and I swear this was her answer, “Moooom, I have to look ravishing.” Oy-vay!
We had one heck of a storm on Monday too, as Hurricane Ike morphed after it hit land and went north. We had some major tree damage and one massive tree will likely have to be completely removed. :( But my oldest son has loved doing storm clean-up and watching daddy chainsaw the tree limbs. He collected about 500 hickory nuts that fell off the trees and he got to climb the fallen tree limbs. Boys!
School uniforms! Kids should not have to think about being “ravishing” at school. There’s plenty of time for that later!
I sometimes wonder if, or rather when, my son will no longer think that his clothes/shoes/etc are cool enough. I get anxiety just thinking about it!
Your kids are beautiful! And thanks for all your wonderful posts. I just love them!
The kids are adorable! I remember when my now 8 year old at age four in preschool announced to me that from now on he was only wearing NIKE clothes. UMMM YEAH… He would have either been naked or wearing the same outfit over and over again. I did buy him a couple things at the outlet, but nope, not getting into that cycle. Thankfully we are out of suburbanville in WA and into the country in IL now where no one cares (even at their private school).
I really love my children’s school… no name brands are allowed. So no clothes with GAP written on them (on the outside) and no “TV talk clothes” (e.g. spiderman shoes, walle tee shirts, or princess clothing). Waldorf school can be a little too dogmatic for me at times, but boy do I agree with them on this issue!
We love that our school adopted uniforms. Now I only have to remember which child will only wear skirts and which one only will wears pants. Your daughter is adorable. I’m sure your influence will make this phase short lived. She sees you being confident woman without the need to wear name brands or support consumerist fashion trends.
what is a hickory nut?
can you eat it?
:)
Wow! Didn’t realize you guys were so close to us. We went thru hurricane Ike as well and are just getting back to school after two weeks without – school and electricity. We’ve been reading your blog for about a month now and I love it. Keep it coming girl.
