It’s a key ingredient in curry powder. It puts the “gold” in golden milk. It is a gorgeous bright yellow-orange spice that adds color to your dishes and it tastes amazing when added to a variety of dishes. It is an earthy spice with antioxidant, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Oh and it is popping up in supplements left and right…it’s Turmeric!
There are numerous health reasons to fall in love with turmeric such as its ability to fight cancer, help regulate your weight, heal wounds and boost immunity. It is also fantastic for beauty and anti-aging. So if want to look and feel younger, and who doesn’t right, look into adding turmeric to your diet or and/or daily routine.
How Turmeric Helps with Anti-Aging
Aging is sped up by free radicals in the body and antioxidants (like turmeric) help neutralize free radicals and the damage they cause to cells and organs. This slows down the signs of aging and improves overall health and vitality. Applying it directly to the skin via a mask or cream can help with skin problems such as acne and dry or oily skin. It also protects the skin by improving collagen production, which is what helps give our skin strength and elasticity, and replaces dead skin cells with healthy “new” ones.
Acne is really just inflammation and sufferers usually have lower levels of antioxidants. The “curcumin” found in Turmeric is a coloring agent that really helps rejuvenate your skin. It corrects blemishes and hyperpigmentation because it is endowed with antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. This make turmeric a top herb to fight acne. Studies have also been done that show the curcumin can help protect against UV damage from the sun. Got super oily skin, perhaps from a hormonal imbalance? Well this study shows that daily application of turmeric with its fatty acids and phytosterols can help reduce excess skin oils and bring balance back to the skin.
Yet another benefit? Turmeric can brighten your smile and whiten your teeth. Booyah!
Make Your Own Turmeric Mask
Ingredients
1 teaspoon of turmeric
1 teaspoon of raw organic honey
1 teaspoon yogurt, coconut, or avocado oil
Mix ingredients into a firm paste that will stick to your face. Turmeric is a dye and it stains, so keep it from getting drippy. Apply the mask evenly all over your clean face. Let the mask dry and leave it on for about 20 minutes and then wash it off with cool water. Dry your face gently with a cloth. Repeat the mask over the course of a few days. You can do it every few weeks, depending on your needs and complexion.
