What is a Victory Garden? Do We Need Them Now?

By Tiffany 16 Comments

I am kind of fascinated with the idea of victory gardens. They are vegetable, fruit and herb gardens planted during world wars l & ll to ensure adequate food supply to the troops and civilians.  They were planted at private residences and also public places. Public authorities, businesses, schools and seed companies worked together to grow more vegetables in order to reduce the pressure on the food supply at a critical time in our history.  People were asked to produce more of their own … [Read more...]

BlackFish – An Important Documentary About the Captivity of Killer Whales

By Tiffany Leave a Comment

My intro to this movie came via Bill Maher last week. He interviewed former Sea World trainer John Hargrove about a new movie he is featured in called Blackfish. It touches upon a hugely important subject....the danger to humans when we capture what we cannot control and also how abusive it is to even keep such animals in captivity. Now I realize you may love Sea World. I do too. I haven't taken my kids there in over 10 years though (despite making trips to Disney and Universal) because I … [Read more...]

America’s Most Endangered River

By Tiffany 4 Comments

I spotted this video (below) over the weekend and I got a little teary eyed. It is true that I was born in the Midwest (Ohio) and live there currently but I consider myself to be a Southwestern gal at heart...a desert rat. I lived in Arizona for over twenty years and spent my childhood there. The Colorado River is a treasure to us desert rats and in the years before I left it was so alarming to hear how badly we were decimating it. The unsustainable way in which many live there is one big reason … [Read more...]

The Power of Reclaiming Domesticity

By Tiffany 13 Comments

Over the weekend I read a great article on The Washington Post about the fact that women are reclaiming domestic activities...ala cooking, canning, knitting and such, and it asks whether this is empowering or a step backwards for women's progress. I think the article is beneficial because it is rightly painting domestic tasks in a favorable light and shows that women who pursue such things are finding enjoyment in them. But I also think it misses a larger point about feminism and … [Read more...]

Helping Each Other During a Recession

By Tiffany 22 Comments

The word recession is getting thrown around in the media a lot lately. We are told that we may be in for some very difficult times and truthfully I am already feeling the pressure. My husband works for a company that pays their winter payroll with loans. They do this because the winter is not their peak season and they simply use loans to keep production going until Spring when their business goes through the roof. Times are so good in the spring and summer in fact that my hubby was getting $200 … [Read more...]
