Zinc Oxide Sunscreens For Safe Sun Protection

By Tiffany 9 Comments

Zinc Oxide Sunscreens For Safe Sun ProtectionWe had some good discussion on my safe sunscreens page recently. Much of it has to do with some recent studies regarding Titanium Dioxide which along with another mineral Zinc Oxide, has long thought to be one of the better ingredients in sunscreens. Much of this data is in regards to inhalation or nano particles though, which either doesn’t apply to sunscreens or is inadvisable anyway (nano particles). Still, there are options for those seeking to use a sunscreen without this mineral. Many brands offer Zinc Oxide based sunscreens. Here are a few of the better options. Some of them are repeats from the other list and some are new. None of them use nano particles.

All Natural Badger Sunscreen – This sunscreen has 20.5 Zinc Oxide amidst many other safe and natural ingredients like Jojoba, Cacao butter, Shea butter, ect. It  also is rated SPF 30. It is supposed to last for 40 minutes in the water so with frequent applications this should a family well for days at the beach or pool. The SkinDeep Database rates it at a 1, which mean low hazard.

Loving Naturals Sunscreen SPF 30 – This product blocks UVA and UVB rays and has natural ingredients with the active one being Zinc Oxide (24.8%). Other ingredients include Grape Seed Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, and Macadamia Nut Oil. It is certified organic and vegan as well. The SkinDeep Database rates it at a 1.

Soleo Organics Sunscreen, SPF 30 – The active ingredient is Zinc Oxide (22.3%) and other ingredients are natural… beeswax, sunflower oil, etc. The SkinDeep Database rates it at a 1.

Think Baby & ThinkSport – For a company that is already child friendly it is no surprise that they have great sunscreens. The Baby version uses 20% Zinc Oxide and the Sport version uses 25%. The SkinDeep Database rates it at a 1.

Enjoy! And for non-sun methods of sunscreen check out this older post.
