Pink Ribbons Everywhere!

Have you seen all of the pink ribbons everywhere that supposedly support breast cancer research? I am sure you have since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I find it very ironic that many of these pink ribbons are seen on the packages of junk food….cookies, cheese cake, soda..etc. Since diet is heavily linked to cancer I am not sure this is sending the best message. Of course maybe breast cancer survivors feel differently but then again maybe not…I would hate to see a colon cancer ribbon on a package of bacon. ;)

I ran across this image today at News Target and had to chuckle a little.

For me, one of the most saddening and frustrating aspects of Breast Cancer Awareness is how activists, marketers and campaigners consistently ignore the benefits that lactation bestows on mothers. After all, breastfeeding particularly extended breastfeeding or breastfeeding multiple children for at least a year each can significantly reduce a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. Sadly, lactation’s role seems downplayed in the prevention of this cancer.

It feels like over kill now too. Almost like it’s losing it’s effectiveness. I see pink on everything and I’m almost immune to it.

It makes me mad when people jump on the charity or cause bandwagon simply to make money. Especially when it’s companies that could be adding to the problem with what they are selling (crap food).

  3. seriously, its a form of advertising to put the ribbons on but hopefully seeing that pink ribbon would lead someone to research and see that they don’t need the cigarrettes, candy, etc.
at least its getting the word out.

  4. Very good point Jenny! It is not just beneficial for baby …there are many benefits for mom too and reduced risk of breast cancer is one of them.

  5. Good one. :)
When I was a kid I got some kind of Ad Busters magazine (Penny Power?) that had phony ads like that. I think it taught me to rise above the Jedi Mind Tricks of advertising.
