TGIF! Have an awesome weekend everyone!
As I mentioned briefly yesterday my 3 year old is now attending school 2 times a week for speech issues. He did NOT like yesterdays session at all. He got very frustrated with the speech therapist and I can’t say that I blame him. She was annoying me to. She would ask him to identify something and he would say it although perhaps not well. But if he didn’t say it to her satisfaction she would continue asking 4 to 5 times until he was confused (since he already answered) and mad. She also gave him blocks to use for following directions like “put the block in the box” or “put one block on top of the box”. etc. If he didn’t understand the command he would start stacking the blocks to make a tower and she would knock them over. After the 4th time she did this he grabbed her hand and shoved it away, giving her the evil eye. He also hated to have to sit in a chair at a desk when the room around him was filled with toys. I can’t blame him…I HOPE it gets easier because he was not happy when we left. It was difficult for me to watch because he is such a laid back easy child and this therapist brought out the worst in him.
In other news, the kids have been having a blast getting to spend to much time with daddy. He has been home a lot due to his job laying people off for a week at a time here and there. He and I have gotten into watching all the seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer together after the kiddos go to bed. We are in the middle of season 3. It is sooo nice to have him not working nights anymore. All next week he will be home again although perhaps a little less mobile since he plans on visiting his doctor for a little something. We have decided not to have any more kids but I can’t make that resolve surgical without major abdominal surgery due to scar tissue from all my other surgeries. So that leaves the ball in his court, LOL. Let’s see if he actually does it. ;)
As for cool links this week:
Check out my post on my raw food blog about what humans were meant to eat from a Biblical perspective. I have a Christian background but would classify myself as agnostic now so I am not sure why I went there…just got to thinking about it one night.
I have also been writing at Eco Child’s Play.
Big Green Purse has a great post about the power of a woman’s purse, aka spending power. It is a great article.
Last week I bought this lunch bag pattern. I am already thinking ahead for the next the next school year when my daughter starts all day kindergarten. I still have tons of fabric form my diaper making days that is laminated on side and would be perfect for lunch bags.
This free scarf pattern is so darn cute it makes me what to learn to crochet pronto!
Have a fabulous weekend all!
Maybe you should go with your gut on this. Sounds like you guys shouldn’t go back to that speech therapist. Can you find a new one? Someone who will be more sensitive? There are plenty out there and I am sure you can find someone who will be more caring. I worked for one when I was younger and he was great, the kids always left giggling and happy. You don’t have to compromise on this. Good luck!!!
I’m giggling at your Buffy comment. This is what my husband and I do when the kids go to bed. We’re almost finished with season 4. It’s addictive!
Your sons therapist sounds like my son’s first therapist. I was SO HAPPY when we found a new one. My son had never even sat in a high chair except those ones at restaurant, and totally didn’t get the chair contraption she’d put him in. Plus, she had all the toys where they could be seen, but she always picked what to work with.
His new therapist is at the local elementary school, her room is bright, inviting and had a table and chairs, no high chair thing. She only has out what they are going to work with that day. And she NEVER corrects or reprimands him, she just redirects him to the original instructions. Plus, she rewards him with goldfish crackers, LOL!
I’d say if you are not comfortable with her technique, you might want to see if you can find someone who is a better fit :)
Thanks for the shout out on my article. I appreciate it!
The cookies sound yummy – and so easy to make! I always loved recipes my kids could make that didn’t require them to turn on the oven. Good idea for Easter baskets, too.
Get a new speech therapist! My 2 1/2 year old girls both see one, and it is the highlight of their day. They love her. She makes language fun and they don’t even realize they are in therapy. There’s got to be another therapist you can see that will treat your son with respect and love and bring out the best in him, not the worst. I say go with your gut too!
Since you seem to love vampire stories (and who doesn’t), I wondered if you had read Laurel K Hamilton. Great stuff!!! Poppy Z Brite is pretty good, but really harsh. The ‘Sonja Blue’ trilogy is really good too.
my thoughts mirror everyone elses!! :) If you weren’t comfortable watching your son with the therapist maybe try a new one. I hope we hear a glowing report soon!!
and I have never seen Buffy….maybe I should check it out.
