Cool off with Homemade Popsicles

Cool off with Homemade Popsicles

BPA free popsicles

Cool off with delicious Popsicles this summer made with BPA free Popsicle molds! AND if you live in my house you get good old fashioned veggies or greens in your Popsicles too. Yum! And I fully disclose the ingredients…no sneaky chef here. My kids know they are eating spinach pops or kale pops or whatever the case may be and they are cool with it because they taste good. Seriously, as I was writing this my 7 year old son popped his head in my door and asked if he could have a spinach pop.

My own kids are crazy about homemade Popsicles and I have been making them for about two months straight now. I make green smoothies daily in my household and I always make extra so I can fill Popsicle molds.

Some recipes my kids love:

Almond-Banana Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 cup raw almonds

3 just ripe bananas

2 tsp raw honey

3 cups water

Blend up the almonds and the water to make almond milk. Strain the milk through a nut milk bag. Blend the almond milk together with the rest of the ingredients and either drink or pour into popsicle molds. Enjoy!

Also…

Green Pineapple Paradise

Ingredients:

1/4 fresh pineapple, chopped

3 large Kale leaves

1 ripe banana

3 fresh mint leaves

2 to 4 cups water

Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth and either drink or pour into popsicle molds. Enjoy!

We also make sure to put them in BPA free Popsicle molds. Here are some ones that I recommend. I confirmed with the manufacturing company that these Tovolo brand popsicle molds are made with polypropylene and are BPA free. Also, obviously silicone would be BPA free as well.

Sounds yummy. I bought popsicle molds a few months ago, but didn’t even think about checking if they were BPA free!

  3. Deborah

I have been looking for BPA popsicle molds. I’m sure my cheapies are BPA filled. Too bad those ones you recommended won’t ship to Canada! Argh!

  4. Cindi

Tiffany, I have been looking for molds. Thanks for the heads up.

Oh, do you want to share your green smoothie recipe? We eat smoothies everyday, and I am curious about your green recipe.

Thanks for the recipes. You should try adding coconut oil too. So healthy and good for you and give smoothies such a yummy tropical taste. Would be great in a popsicle. Now I want to try it!!! :)

So what’s the recipe for your spinach popsicles?

  8. Michelle

question about the kale recipe – do you cook the kale first?

    thanks!

  9. Michelle

    one more question :-)

do any of the pop molds you recommend have caps that can be put back on if the kid doesn’t finish the pop?

and while I’m asking, do you recommend any bpa free ice cube trays (preferably inexpensive)?

  10. Michelle,

I do not cook the Kale…we like to keep the nutritional value in tact by eating it raw.

As for putting the caps back on…I do not know. The ones we have do not allow for this.

Do you know of any safe ice cube trays? I’m making homemade food for my baby but don’t know of a safe ice cube tray to freeze the food in. (bpa free, phthalate free, etc)

Check out http://www.thetickletrunk.com they are getting stainless steel icecube trays, available in March. There is a photo on the site. They also carry great stainless steel bottles and airtight containers at 1/2 the price of other websites. And Popsicle molds are coming, no ETA. Its worth bookmarking.

Did I find this site too late to get the green smoothie recipe? I tried the link but only saw half of the recipe.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Thanks for the links, i’ve got a cheap dollar store popsicle tray right now and have only used it a few times but I am shopping around for a BPA brand right now as well. I will definatly pick up one of these.

Thanks also for the recipe i’m always looking for healthy popsicle recipes for the little ones. I refuse to buy the ones from the store.

    Take care

Thanks for the links and the great recipes! I have a 16 month old who LOVES my homemade smoothie and I know he would love them in popsicle form too. Adding Greens is a FABULOUS idea. Do you think these pop molds would work for a toddler?

  16. Michael

    Dear Tiffany,

Thanks for finding BPA free popsicle molds. As a widower with 2 little ones, 6 and 4, I appreciate you’re doing the research for me and many other parents.

    Regards,
    Michael

Are you positive the Tovolo molds are BPA free? It doesn’t say it on the box?

    Thank you!

    • Heather does it tell what kind of plastic it is.. aka the #? According to the company they use BPA free plastic.

      • Heather

Hi Tiffany…sorry for the delay. I can’t find a number anywhere on the mold or the box for the Tovolo brand. Have you heard of Prepara brand that makes a “volcano” mold? Someone just bought it for my son but also does not say what the number is or whether it’s bpa free or not. Thanks for your help! Heather

does anyone know of a recipe for licorice popsicles? Used to get them as a kid but haven’t seen for years! They are white in color but taste like licorice

    • Adelfarmer

Try anise, it teasts like licorice. Get it at a good health food store to get full flavor!
