Perfume is a big business. Sadly, it is also a largely unregulated industry and perfume companies can put nearly any chemical they want in their formulas and get away with it. They can lace their perfume with hormone disrupting chemicals and chemicals that could cause allergic reactions such as asthma, wheezing, headaches, and dermatitis. I know personally I cannot wear conventional perfume without suffering from headaches. I can’t even walk into that department in a store without the same and I almost never get headaches…perhaps 2-3 a year under normal circumstances. Long ago I wore perfume every day. After years of clean living though it seems I cannot tolerate conventional perfume anymore.
My body clearly tells me I need to stay away from these toxic concoctions but almost everyone likes to smell nice right? Well, that is where essential oils come in. Thanks to these lovely plant essences I can wear scents again and instead of harming my health…they actually enhance it. They just make better sense for ladies (and gents) concerned about their health who still want to smell all pretty. What could be better?!
Essential Oils You Can Wear As Perfume
Let’s start with the basics. Many essential oils can be applied “neat” or as-is and undiluted. Others are more potent and should be used in a carrier oil. A carrier oil also “carries” the scent to a larger area of the body and thus disperses the scent more. I personally like avocado oil. It is not greasy and has no scent of its own. I prefer to add my oils to avocado oil inside of a glass roll-on bottle. This makes for super easy application and they are small enough so that I can take them with me everywhere…for their scent and for their therapeutic value.
Here you can see a photo of what I am currently carrying in my purse. I have a little satchel that I use to carry oils, lip balm, and deodorant. Right now I am rockin Thieves (clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiata, rosemary), lavender, and DiGize (tarragon, ginger, peppermint, juniper, fennel, lemongrass, anise, and patchouli). I carry these around for therapeutic reasons but they all happen to smell fantastic as well and I get compliments when I wear them.
Here are some lovely smelling essential oil singles you can wear for their luscious scent. Pick according to your preference be it spicy, woodsy, citrus, resinous, floral, or herbaceous.
rose
jasmine
neroli
lavender
clary Sage
white Angelica
sandalwood
patchouli
bergamot
frankincense
lemongrass
ylang yang
tangerine
peppermint
These are just some of your options. You can mix and match as well and create blends. If you need help figuring out what scents work best together I highly recommend the book Mixing Essential Oils for Magic. It goes into great depth discussing how to blend oils by botanical family, by scent group, and by perfume note. It also contains profiles of most essential oils and carrier oils.
There is also an easier way if you don’t want to make your own blends and you want to wear something that smells like perfume does. Young Living has done all the work for us and made quite a few blends that smell amazing. The wonderful thing about these blends is that they may contain small amounts of oils that you might find it too expensive to buy on their own such as rose or melissa.

Sclaressence
My favorites are Valor, Abundance, Sclaressence, Highest Potential, and Believe. I wear one of these daily (on my body and in a diffuser necklace) and if I need to reapply I put some in a tiny 2ml amber bottle (pictured below). I don’t want to risk the entire bottle breaking or leaking in my purse. These smell better than any department store perfume anywhere AND they make my cells happy. It’s a total win, win.
Valor – Spruce, rosewood, blue tansy and frankincense in a base of coconut oil.
Sclaressence – Clary sage, peppermint, sage lavender, and fennel.
Abundance – Orange, frankincense, patchouli, clove, ginger, myrrh, cinnamon and spruce.
Highest Potential – Australian Blue, ylang ylang, cedarwood, blue tansy, and white fir, Gathering essential oil blend, frankincense, sandalwood, lavender, cinnamon, rose, spruce, geranium, and jasmine.
Believe – Idaho balsam fir, coriander, bergamot, frankincense, Idaho blue spruce, ylang ylang, geranium.

I don’t use essential oils, but I know they are all the rage these days.
I have been reading a lot of essential oils lately. I never knew about the perfume part.
I adore essential oils, they get used in the house every day! Quite a few of my friends are distributors for Young Living Oils, so that is handy.
I love wearing oils as a scent! I have been a fan of lavender for forever!
That’s fun that you carry the oils in your purse. I think some of them would be great as a personal fragrance.
I just started getting into the essential oils, I have never worn them as perfume but I can say they help my daughter’s asthma!
Love essential oils. I use them for everything.
Great post. I just recently got into oils to help with my allergies and headaches. I haven’t thought of wearing them as perfume. Thanks for sharing.
It seems everyone is into esstianl oil these days. Guess i need to learn more for sure. I love all natural products.
I love making salt and sugar scrubs with oils!!
I just ordered a few oils last week. I have never tried them and can’t wait!
You will love it!!!
Using natural lavender is so cool! I never thought about using natural oils as perfume!
My daughter loves using natural body care products. She would love to use natural oils, not to mention how much money she would end up saving.
The peppermint oil sounds really nice. I would use it for the scent alone!
So many of these sound so yummy smelling to me. I definitely want to experiment with essential oils.
I have never smoked but I have seen how addicting it is. The fewer places that sell the products, the fewer people who will hear.
I love the idea of using a glass roll-on bottle! So much easier for applying just the right amount.
I remember the little roll-on bottles from when I was a kid and my grandma sold Avon! Essential oils as perfume is a great idea – thanks for sharing!
I had no idea that you could use essential oils as perfume! I know what I’ll be doing now!
I have so many friends who swear by essential oils now!
I use peppermint oil to help with sore joints. Also, burning it helps to give more energy. I love finding natural solutions.
I like the idea of a diffuser necklace! Sounds discreet but practical.
Please be aware that many of the oils mentioned here are either irritants (cinnamon) or phototoxic (angelica, bergamot etc.)….
Bergamot oil is highly photoreactive, as are all citrus peel oils, as are some carrier oils high in vitamin A such as rosehip seed. Depending on the dilution and sensitivity of the user they can cause hyperpigmentation or blistering rashes. Essential oils should not be in contact with skin without individual research and trial. Additionally some essential oils are from endangered plants and raise ethical questions, or can stain clothing, or with daily use can affect hormones in unintended ways. Perhaps it’s better to use essential oils as the medicines they are and enjoy the secondary effect of smelling nice.
All your points are valid but I still think making a perfume from essential oils would be better than buying a toxic conventional perfume. Using it for special occasions is also vital and not for every day. I would suggest buying oils only from an ethical company such as Young Living. They just recently reformulated on of their most popular oil blends because it contained an endangered oil and they did not feel it was ethical to keep using it. They also stop selling oils and mark them as out of stock for months and months if the supply is too low and using these oils would be unethical. They are the only oil company I know of that does this.
what oil does sandalwood mix well with
bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, clove, geranium, grapefruit, fennel, frankincense, jasmine, lavender, lemon, mandarin, myrrh, neroli, orange, palmarosa, patchouli, rose, rosewood, vetiver, and ylang ylang
I put on Joy and Inner child this morning over my heart and love the smell. Was wondering how I might go about making a perfume using these blends?
