My Milkshake is Better Than Yours

by Tiffany in Healthy Eating

The first thing that came to mind when I read Kari’s post about the ingredients in strawberry milkshakes was that milkshake song…my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, LOL. So that is why I chose the title I did…not because I really have a strawberry milkshake that is better then yours…but I did find a health milkshake recipe and I posted it below.

Anyway…I was shocked when I saw the YouTube video below. I guess I always suspected that milkshakes at fast food joints were more like a chemical cocktail than a real milkshake but dang…59 ingredients in a strawberry milkshake?! What happened to milk and strawberries?

1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1 cup milk
1/4 cup soft tofu (or use ice cream if you don’t want the soy)
1 tablespoon frozen orange juice concentrate
1 tablespoon ground flaxseed (optional)
2 teaspoons wheat germ (optional)

Place all ingredients in the blender. Process until smooth anad frothy.
Pour into a tall glass, and drink immediately. Enjoy!

I remember reading about the chemical conglomeration that passes for food aka the strawberry milkshake with 400+ ingredients in Fast Food Nation. Gross!

In the recipe you write “1/4 cup soft tofu (or use ice cream if you don’t want the soy). ” To be fair, you should also write next to 1 cup of milk: ” (or use soymilk if you don’t want the hormones, antibiotics, animal cruelty and environmental destruction that goes along with cow’s milk)”

Now, now…that’s not very nice and in many cases it is not accurate. As someone who will pay $8.00 a gallon for organic, raw milk from a local farm where the cows are treated like beloved pets, I think this view is rather narrow nor does it give proper credit to all the wonderful omnivore’s out there who make conscious decisions about their dairy.
