Earth Movie from Disney Nature

earth movie poster

I am super excited about a new movie being released on Earth Day. The kids and I have been seeing in-theatre trailers for months and we plan on spending a portion of Earth Day in theatres this year.

This movie is the first release from the new Disneynature label. Earth is narrated by James Earl Jones, and tells the remarkable story of three animal families and their amazing journey across the planet we all share.  Directors Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield, the acclaimed creative team behind the Emmy Award-winning “Planet Earth” series combine forces again to bring this epic adventure to the big screen, beginning Earth Day 2009.

I am a big fan of Disney films already so I love that they are combining some of my favorite things into one awesome package…movies, family fun, and the environment. And is it just me or does everyone get crazy goosebumps whenever they hear James Earl Jones??? Plus, Disneynature recently announced that it will plant a tree in the highly endangered Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest in honor of every person who sees the film its first week.

We will let you know our thoughts of the movie on Earth Day but until then
you can enjoy a piece of it at home. Check out the official trailer before you go. It rocks!

If it’s anything like the Planet Earth series, it will for sure be a great movie!

Hi Tiffany! I have 2 young girls, 4 1/2 & almost 3, and my husband and I take them outside and into nature as often as we can so they can have a love of the earth and nature as we do. It has been a long winter here in Michigan and we have watched a lot of shows on TV about nature and animals, etc., to try to break up being stuck indoors! We also went to Orlando for vacation and took the girls to Seaworld. They love animals and loved to see Orca and Beluga whales in person! We are really looking forward to seeing the movie this month!

  25. Erin A

I hope the movie is good and really geared towards children. My family rented Artic Tale a few months ago. Silly me, I thought it would be appropriate for the whole family. Instead it traumatized my 4 y/o daughter when the baby brother polar bear died and the mother left the baby daughter. I wish there had been some sort of warning for parents of very young children.

  26. I’d love to take my sons to it, but like the previous commenter, I better check it out so I don’t traumatize them. ;)

  27. Kelly

I’m excited about this movie – see earlier comments – but…
I’ve been thinking about how LOUD movie theaters can be, often reaching decibels that are unsafe for developing ears. I’ve heard about theaters having special showings for families with young children that they don’t play the sound so LOUD. I’m going to have to do a bit more research before taking my little one to the theater. We’ll definetely be checking it out on DVD though!

  28. Aimee

Looks great! We’re looking forward to seeing it. Thanks!

  29. Joan

I can’t wait to see it!!! I didn’t even know about the film until you posted this. THANKS!

  76. Erik

What a great way to celebrate Earth Day and for the Walt Disney Co. to express their environmentality!

  77. Tina

I am a graduate of a radio and television degree program and wish to also make a documentary on the environment. I think more movies like these should be made to remind everyone of the beauty that surrounds us. We only have one home and that is Earth. We need to prioritize Earth as our number one concern before its way too late. I’m so excited to see this film and I’m counting down the days!

  78. mari

This will be the first movie we will take our 4 & 5 year olds too. I read a review and it mentioned that there may be some predatory scenes. I sure hope that there isn’t anything graphic, that’s my only concern, otherwise I hope it’s sweet and has cute animals. they would love it that way.

  79. Amy

Just 2 days away! I’m taking my 3 1/2 year old Niece – who has falling in love with animals – this is going to be fun!

  80. stacy kidd

  82. Mandy

My kids are extremely excited to see Earth. We are taking a 1/2 “mental health” day to get to the theaters to see it. The trailer is breathtaking and Jone’s voice adds that much more to it! We can’t wait!

  83. I teach 1st and 2nd grade in a public school in Mid-Michigan and my kids have talked nonstop about wanting to see this movie! I just won 4 tickets from a local radio station this morning and am trying to figure out how to get 20 kids to this movie event with me.

  84. Lauren

I am looking forward to this very much – I don’t have work on Earth Day and plan on spending the majority of the day outside enjoying the planet around me, followed by making a trip to the theater to enjoy the parts of the planet I will likely never be able to see!

  90. BEth

We just got home from the movie…LOVED it

  91. Kevin

I haven’t seen the movie personally but my wife and son did. She told me about the male polar bear that dies. It breaks my heart. Why is it that every Disney movie has to portrait death? I understand that they are trying to educate people about climate change but the persons behind the camera did nothing to try to save the polar bear. These animals are becoming extinct and Disney sold them out to make a movie. I doubt that I will ever see or purchase another Disney movie for as long as I live.

    • Mike

Kevin, the footage had little to do with Disney but rather some joint ventures with the BBC and European production companies. It was pretty clear to me that this footage was in existence, probably from the filming of the BBC’s “Planet Earth” series, and that Disney just found a way to monetize the existing footage by cutting it into a 90 minute film and using their distribution and marketing capabilities.

Disney didn’t sell out the Polar Bears. Documentaries are created to document events. I’m sure there were clauses that the photographers had to adhere to which prohibited them from interfering with the wildlife. The Polar Bear dies even if nobody is watching. Baby elephants die, impala are eaten, Bambi dies. Everyone and everything dies. If you prefer your 10 yr old to watch sponge bob square pants, well I guess that’s your prerogative.

I don’t feel the need to defend Disney, but I can assure you that you will consume their products again in the future. You do watch ESPN now right? (Disney company…)

      Cheers,

      Mike

  92. Sausan Ricafort

I am one with others on helping our mother earth. Can’t wait to watch this movie! Thanks Disney!

  93. Roxanne

I saw the Earth Movie today and enjoyed the scenery and the animals up til the carnivores came out. I wouldn’t recommend this movie to young children and my daughter and I left early before we saw any more carnivores or torture for the animals. They only show you the sweet things in the trailer, but there’s too much reality in it and wished that they eliminated the sad parts…… If you don’t like serious movies, I would not recommend to see this. However, it has made me more serious and more determined than ever to push for solar power….. The car industries and homes could have been solar powered years and years ago and we’ve had the technology for a long time, but are too stubborn to change. It’s time to change. That’s the good that came out of this movie is the conviction that everyone needs to drastically change and go SOLAR!!!!

    • Stephanie

Not to be a stick in the mud, but as an engineer, I feel it my duty to express reality in some cases. Solar is good, but seriously not THE answer. First off, it doesn’t work at night. Second, there is not enough sun in many parts of the country. Third, we do not currently have the infrastructure (i.e. power lines) to support large scale use of solar energy. Fourth, although we have had “solar technology” for quite some time, it is only recently becoming efficient and affordable enough to use in mainstream society. And lastly, we also need to consider the space and materials needed and pollution caused by the manufacture and installation of solar panels. I am sure solar will become more prominent in the future than it is now, but it is not going to save us all anytime soon.

  94. Stephanie

I guess I am a late comer to this movie, but I have to say I was a little disappointed. To me it was a very old school documentary and they didn’t do anything to make it alive and fresh. Granted, I watched it as an adult without kids, but I felt like it was a great opportunity wasted.

First off they marketed it as “the remarkable story of three animal families and their amazing journey across the planet we all share.” However, I doubt 20 minutes of the whole movie were actually about these animal families. Instead it jumped around the globe chaotically showing lots of cool nature footage with almost no in depth explanation or education.

It seems to me it would have had much more impact if it stayed more focused on the animal families and somehow related the surrounding events to them. This way we can form a “bond” and actually care about the animals. In addition, opportunities were sadly missed to tell us more about the wildlife we did see. For example here are ducks jumping from a tree. Fascinating! Why don’t they die from the fall, where are they going? Will they live? Does their mother feed them or they on their own? So many lost opportunities.

  95. SK

This movie is incomplete. There is a focus on the death of animals throughout the movie. Very little explanation for the viewer as to why the animals are migrating which would help put the struggles of migration into context. I went with my 7 year old. I would not do this again!

  96. Lauren

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just watched this movie and it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve always been so annoyed with “tree hugers” and people who kept shoving global warming, we’re killing the planet, etc. down my throat. But this is the first point of view I’ve heard/seen that has actually honestly moved me. It made me want to change my lifestyle so that my children, and my children’s children would be able to experience and appreciate the wonder of God’s creation. For me, the most pivotal moment in the movie as far as changing my perspective, was when the male polar bear struggled because of the quickended melting of the ice. I don’t want saving the earth and it’s creatures to become like a “religion” to me, but I’ve taken on a new view. If people really want to effect others, this is a way to do it!

  97. Your topic about this topic is very intereating. I will select the research paper writing services to buy an essay and pre written essays about this good post, because it is the good way.

  98. Melinda Sue Hatfield

I heart them too and so do my kids they’re 4 and 5 and they adore these movies and think they’re awesome :)

  99. Hi. I wanted to read your thoughts after watching this movie but am having trouble finding it in your site. Could you please provide the link to the page? Thanks.
