How to Make Homemade Almond Milk

How to Make Homemade Almond Milk

Homemade Almond MilkThis morning I made some raw almond milk. It is still a living food, it’s vegan, and is very good for you. My two boys love to drink it straight up…my daughter would rather have raw cows milk I think. But none of them mind when I use it in cereals or in homemade raw ice cream. We also use it to make chocolate milk and banana milk which they all love. It is great as a base for milky matcha tea drink too. Yum!

It is super easy to make. Other than the 8-12 hours I soak the almonds first it only takes about 5-10 minutes to actually make. But you do need to soak those almonds first. By soaking nuts, you are breaking down the phytic acid so that nutrients can be absorbed properly. Nuts have high amounts of enzymes inhibitors sd well, which is why unsoaked nuts are hard to digest. The soaking process helps to neutralize the enzymes and allow for proper digestion and maximum nutrient absorption.

After soaking I use my Vita-Mix 5200 to blend the almonds and make a creamy smooth and kinda like a smoothie in consistency.

Then strain the milk through a cheesecloth to get it smooth enough for drinking straight up, just like regular milk… otherwise it kind of resembles a smoothie or thin milkshake. The brown seed casing gets strained out as well. After I squeeze all the milk out of the cheesecloth I spread the almond pulp on a dehydrator sheet and I use my Excalibur dehydrator to dry it out. After it is dry I will ground it into almond flour for pie crusts or raw cookies.

The remaining milk can be used as desired. Enjoy!

  1. Oh! I love Almond Milk. I’ve tried making my own almond butter and it was delicious. Thanks for the post, I’ll give it a try. Your raw recipe book looks awesome. I’ll have to get one of those too.

I saw your tweet about this earlier today. So glad that you posted about it! Thanks so much!

Maybe I’m blind, but I’m not seeing the Almond Milk recipe … I’m curious what you used. I tried making almond milk once with almonds & water (I believe) but my food processor did not do a good job with it at all. I don’t have a Vitmamix … maybe that’s the magic touch?

  4. that’s very interesting. i have been buying almond milk at trader joe’s. i’ll have to try making it some time soon.

I make this too! My high-raw all vegan kids (5 of ’em) just inhale it. My recipe is similar, although I switch it up a bit sometimes by adding a date for sweetness, maybe some cinnamon or a dash of nutmeg…it’s tasty plain, but so good when it’s jazzed up a bit. I added raw organic cacao nibs to today’s batch and…WOW. So good! Like chocolate almond milk. We were all fighting for the last few drops! It’s easy to make sunflower seed ‘milk’ or hempseed ‘milk’ too, they taste so good and they’re good for you. Yum!

  6. I’ve done this too. It’s fun and easy… though a little messy. A dehydrator is the next on my list.

Can we freeze almond milk?? Making it every couple of days not easy for me.??

What ratio of water to nuts do you use? How much water do you soak in overnight?

  9. I used 6 cups water to blend with. I just covered the nuts in water when soaking and diposed of the soak water afterwards.

Hi, I’am wondering can you also make this almond milk out of unsweetened coconut milk instead of water.. Again what are the measurements for your recipe. 6 quarts water to how much nuts.If you do not have a vita-mix can you do this in a regular blender or food processor and then pour thru cheesecloth?

  11. You could use coconut water for sure. It might be kind of expensive almond milk though. ;)

What is the recipe for the almond milk? It sure sounds good, but I don’t want to waste a bunch of almonds in ignorance! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

as much as i enjoy making almond milk, with work, school, activities, time is at a premium.

i recently found almond breeze sells refrigerated half gallons at publix. the chocolate is such an indulgent treat!

I love Almond milk, even though it isn’t a raw food I like to add a tiny bit of Vanilla sometimes to add to it. my toddler loves it. I make a great nut cheese with the leftover pulp that i got from “Rawsome”

I am glad you posted this because almond milk is so easy to make and homemade is so much better than the stuff sold in the stores.

Where do you buy your almonds? Do you buy in bulk? Does it matter if they are whole or broken?

  18. Christy, I buy my almonds in bulk from a local food co-op. They come whole.

  19. This looks really yummy actually. Does it taste fresh for a while though? We also joined the local food co-cop and the savings are adding up. I love it.

  20. Love this! Just recently tried store bought almond milk and my son loved it but it would be great to make myself! I was wondering if you use actual raw almonds? I know that most states are required to pasteurize them like cows milk, but Ive heard you can find some truly raw sometimes…

    • Ashley, I get truly raw almonds. I believe they are imported but I have heard some raw foodies say they have gotten the pasteurized almonds to sprout which would indicate they are still living foods.

Ooh, you’ve inspired me to finally make this myself. Where did you get the cool retro glass milk container? :). (great photo – makes it look even yummier!)

    • Heather I got those jugs from a homesteading supply store online.

Do you know of anyone who has used a regular blender? and what about dehydrating in the oven?

    • Andrea

I use a regular blender and a dish towel to strain it.  No problem!

I love almonds and vanilla so am definitely going to give it a go.
