Feeling so jazzed today. I grew up in the Southwest and was a real water baby for pretty much my whole life. Growing up we always had an in ground pool and for 9 months out of the year I would spend most of my free time in the water…. that or roller blading. My husband and I dated for years with water as our go to place… pool parties, public pools, waterparks, weekends at the lake, etc. I guess I married another water baby.
Then life got in the way after marriage and a desk job at a marketing firm meant the only water I got to see was at the gym. A move to Ohio kinda put a kibosh on any water all together. We get season passes to a waterpark in the summer but that is more for kiddie enjoyment and due to my guilt over not having had the means to teach my kids to swim. My brother and I knew how to swim before we could walk… having older kids who cannot swim is unfathomable to me.
Anyway, this week I got a lead on a gym very close to me that has a pool. I took a tour and within 2.5 seconds signed a 2 year contract… the water called to me I tell ya. That and I found out they were affiliated with my fave gym back in Phoenix. I knew I had a winner on my hands. This morning I went to my first water aerobics class and couldn’t get the goofy grin off my face. Now I keep going in the bathroom were my swimsuit is drying out just to smell that “pool smell”. I’m home! Or at least it feels that way.
It is ironic that I can feel so at home in what is sure to be a chemical soup. Not sure there is much I can do about that though. I do need to get a cap so I can avoid damaging my hair and I have my eye on a pair of water dumbbells to.
Anyone else love water and have to make due with a pool? Any tips on minimizing chemical exposure?
I’m definitely a water baby I love the water and I am also stuck in ohio. We Have an above ground pool but we don’t get to swim many months out of the year. What I wouldn’t give to live in florida or somewhere else with beaches available.
Our local pools open in May and I can’t wait. Bring on summer–I’m sick of this cold weather!
What fun! Glad you found such a great place to swim. You might want to check into the moss-based PoolNaturally system. Our two major public pools in the relatively small city of Mankato (the college pool and the YMCA) have both switched to the system now. I wrote about it here with resources if you want to learn more about it: http://www.examiner.com/green-culture-in-mankato/msu-and-ymca-switch-to-natural-pool-cleaning-system Mankato is not usually at the forefront of green changes, so I’m guessing it was a relatively simple and affordable change for them to make.
That is so fun! I love the water too. The water is so any things and does so may great thing for our bodies. I love the weightlessness of the water too. Have a ton of fun!
Definitely a water baby here! I grew up in Southern California, and swimming in any body of water was always a favorite thing. There were days at the lake or the beach when my parents couldn’t get me out of the water for the entire day.
Now I’m in Portland, OR, and pools are closed down for 10 months out of the year, and even the Y is way too expensive! It breaks my heart because my daughter’s already 6 months old and I haven’t dunked her in water deeper than the bathtub yet!

Someone told me that applying coconut oil before swimming helps prevent the body from absorbing chlorine through the skin, but not being a water baby myself, I haven’t researched that.
