The ABCs of Supplements

I want to give a shout out to the latest podcast from Whole Foods Market. It is all about supplements …various benefits and forms of supplements, things to know about regulation and explains a few terms that are often confusing. I applaud that the show really let us know that healthy diet is the KEY but that since there are 40 vitamins and minerals that are essential to life functions we may need some extra help. Diet first…supplements second.

Malia Curran talks about how you need to know the source company too and that you can’t trust the labels which I feel is excellent advice. It is only 6.5 minutes long so give it a listen…they always have informative podcasts. Perfect for a little health talk radio while you read your email!

And next month the topic is “Libido” for Valentine’s so you can look forward to learning about “Horny Goat Weed” and other zesty herbal approaches to passion building. Sounds like it could be a good one. :)

Thanks for the post — it was interesting and it’s good to hear supplements get some good press.

Vitamins can be so confusing. I took Rainbow Lite Prenatals for 3 years before I found the report about Lead in prenatals and that they contained lead. I did a lot of research and finally decided on Shaklee vitamins. Hopefully, they are good vitamins.

  3. Ahhh dont’ tell me that about Rainbow Light! I have been swearing by those. Blerg.
I’ll have to catch that podcast. I have been into the suppliments more lately.

I take supplements and appreciate this post. My dad is 70 and looks 25 years younger thanks to taking the right supplements.

Ugh! I’m so mad about the Rainbow Light Prenatals I could spit. Although I’d better not spit around anyone because I’d probably hurt them because of all of the heavy metals I’ve been ingesting. Ugh!

Now, to add salt to the wound, the natural vitamins that I was giving my toddlers (Nature’s Plus Animal Parade) are also on the “worst children’s vitamins” list for their lead content.

So my little ones were getting lead from me (from nursing) and lead from their own vitamins.

More salt to the wound: when I called Rainbow Light in disbelief, the lady proceeded to justify the lead content of their vitamins saying that it was within legal limits. REALLY?! Oh, well that’s okay. Um, not.

You know what? The acceptable limit of lead in vitamins for me and my children is NONE! All the little bits here and there add up.

    Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!

Sorry. It must be the lead poisoning talking…

I know that hearing my supplements, especially my prenatal, have lead might make me crazy, but as an acupuncturist/chemist I have researched this topic quite a bit.
There is a small amount of naturally occurring lead in soil, so any supplement that is food based (for example Chinese herbs, Rainbow Light vitamins) will have a very tiny amount of lead. So does food.
Supplements that are manufactured by chemists in a lab do not have this problem but they also aren’t “real”.

I love Rainbow Bright Prenatals and plan to continue taking them and recommending them to my clients

I have been told that Standard Process vitamins are excellent – and food-based which is easier to digest!
