This book is a bit outdated in a few ways but I still think this book merits a read by the environmentally conscience and those who want to protect their household from toxins. Not only does it go into all the reasons why conventional cleaning products are not acceptable it has tons of great recipes for making your own cleaning products. Drop That Bleach!
No surprise here but bleach is not very good for the environement. Adding chlorine (in conventional bleach) to an organic-rich waste stream (like rinse water) leads to the formation of environmentally hazardous byproducts, such as dioxins. Dioxins are carcinogenic. But if chlorine is bad then how do you get your laundry looking bright and white? This YouTube clip shows an urban homestead called Path to Freedom. The Dervaes family shows us how they converted a 1/5 acre city lot in Pasadena, CA into an eco-oasis that has reduced their dependence on electricity by 2/3 and increased their goals of living sustain ably and self-sufficiently. The Money Mammals
Environmentalism and frugality often co-mingle. Yes, I will pay more for organic, fair trade items but I also like to think that I find other ways to be more frugal in my life so that it all balances out.
